3.5/5
So, I read this for 2 reasons.1. It's been on my kindle for a hot minute.2. I recently read her book in the Vino and Veritas series through Sarina Bowen's Heart Eyes Press. And, while I wasn't disappointed, I can see how her writing improved since this was written. I felt like this story dragged on in some parts. Sure, it was sexy and some emotional moments, but because this is a series of standalones and I hadn't read the previous books, some of the military acronyms and jargon weren't explained, making some parts a little hard to follow.I did enjoy the character development and Wes and Dustin's inner circles of family and friends. They were mostly supportive in the end. Although I kept wondering why Wes had a hangup about being nak*d around Dustin and letting him touch him. It doesn't really get explained clearlySomething else that kind of irked me was how the author seemed allergic to using "I" pronouns in sentences. There was a lot of choppy dialogue where the guys didn't use "I". It made them sound very caveman, and not in a sexy, possessive way. More it made them sound a bit dumb.Overall, I did enjoy the story and would still recommend it. 3.5/5 stars

Can be read as standalone, I did
This was actually the first "out of uniform" book I read. The cover was what first caught my attention, as I find it scorching. Since I actually liked the sound of the synopsis, I gave it a try.The beginning is a total hook. I loved it. The relatively tame sex in the beginning was scorching. The emotions were off the charts. Later sex was so angst ridden and furtive it was harder to enjoy, but the emotions definitely felt real. The pain felt so real. One need fighting against another. Wanting something you know it forbidden, but wanting it so badly you try anyway.I could have used less of the sister, and extra angst, but I give it a pass because I loved the guys both so much. And maybe Dustin could have manned up with his family sooner, but honestly with everything else he was dealing with I give him a pass on that too.Normally I am all for absolute realism in my fantasy stories, but in this case I could have used more fantasy. I don't think this is a spoiler but just in case I saved it for last.MAJOR SPOILER:If you're like me, you could see the ending coming from the very first. It is heartbreaking that they don't both fully get what they want. Don't get me wrong it's not a sad ending by any means, but it is by far the more realistic than I would have preferred. Having some decent personal and working knowledge of the military I mostly understand the commissioned / enlisted relationship prohibition. It's just that "love is love" and sometimes it makes me so sad that we still make people chose between what they love to do and who they love.

Just okay
I like Annabetb Albert a great deal and I love this series. I didn't love this book and struggled to finish it.I adored the opening with Dustin and Wes meeting in San Diego but once that got to San Diego the book went south for me.Partly, I never really got over Dustin not being more honest and open with his brother (a hero from a previous book in the series). I am also not a huge fan of forbidden romance but good writing (and Albert is a very good writer) can move me past that. However, I just never adjusted the the angst and the lack of couple time in this book. Not for me.I was given this book for my honest review. So, there you have it.

Best of the Bunch
There is a scene toward the end of this straightforward lust-to-love story which might bring a tear to your eye and a flutter to your heart--all I'm going to tell you is that it involves a neck chain. The symbolism attached to that scene is a perfect denouement to a story that has more than you would expect from an already brilliantly plotted and sweetly told series.Dustin has taken quite some time to come out to himself as bi, let along fully gay, and he has experimented only through an app for military men on the down low where he has met up with Wes, who is on the opposite coast but has been sharing chatter about many things as well as phone sex. When Dustin makes it across the country for a visit and they hook up, it's a huge surprise to both of them that Wes takes the dominant role and in some kooky BSDM action (not severe at all) Dustin comes into his own. Then Dustin goes home and they don't make plans to see each other again, though they each wish privately they lived on the same coast. Then all hell breaks loose when quite surprisingly Wes is assigned to California and it turns out that he is sent to Dustin's SEAL unit--which stuns both of them because neither one knew they were both SEALS. Worse, Dustin is Wes' superior and their hoped-for affair must end.Wow, does this get dicey--and at the same time beautiful. Author Annabeth Albert leads both Dustin and Wes--and the reader--down a path where their respective internal conflicts crystalize and clarify to the point that they realize they cannot be without each other. And that's how I'll end it. It took me a few days to get around to writing this review because I was still touched by how the author brought our two really special men to a certain path. I was savoring. Bravo!

Angst and agony galore but so so good
Oh my heart! Such an emotional story, by far the angstiest in the series so far. This is a story of Dustin (Dylan's big brother from At Attention) and Wes, who hook up via the military app Joe4Joe. They spend a memorable night together but things get a whole lot complicated when the new guy in Dustin's team turns out to be Wes. The regulations concerning fraternization between a superior and a subordinate are strict and very thoroughly upheld so even a close friendship would be breaking the rules - let alone an affair. So our heroes are faced with a dilemma - either continue in secret and hope they don't get busted or let go of their chance of something more...I mean, wow. This was something else indeed. This is such a good series and each instalment just improves and completes this world the author has created. Here we get to peek at Apollo and Dylan's married life and Maddox and Bryan as well as Pike and Ryan get a cameo too - it's just so wonderful to see the threads come together.I am eagerly anticipating the next instalment!!!

Online romance FTW
Ahhh I love this series. Annabeth is a one click author for me now and I look forward to each of her new release with baited breath. This was a great addition to the series and I love when the MCs meet online and find their HEA.
