Best book I've read to date about mindfulness practices
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their life. Written by Dr. Amit Sood, who is the Chairman of the Mayo Mind Body Initiative, it's a very interesting and extremely informative read. His credentials are fantastic. His combined background in the best in medical science, along with lifelong meditation and mindfulness practices, make him uniquely qualified to present a fresh new view in these areas. There are scores of books out there about mindfulness and meditation. What makes this book, and all of his books, different is that he explains in scientific terms why practices of gratitude, kindness, and novelty help the brain function at its highest level. He provides a very doable how-to approach to incorporating more of these and other positive practices into your life. He explains why so many people, including the Dalai Lama, find meditation to be difficult. Dr. Sood is not dismissing the practice but is explaining why it may not be for everyone. As if all this weren't enough, it's a fascinating read. Well-written with lots of examples, I had difficulty putting it down at times. But as the author suggests, it is meant to be read in chunks and digested over time. His other excellent books cover much of the same ground, but this is his most comprehensive.I first discovered him on TED talks and then found a couple of his previous books in the library. On the strength of all that, I was convinced I wanted to have this book as a regular reference. You might wish to do the same if you are not ready to spend $27 on this book.

Redesign Your Life and Free Your Mind
My life improved dramatically when I began following the practical, insightful and highly principled tenets of Dr. Amit Sood's program and books. I am delighted with this new book! Discover the neural traps that cage us and how to free ourselves from their hold. Examples of these traps include mind wandering, negativity bias, emotional vulnerability, comparing and competing, our design to be dissatisfied, and inability to suppress thoughts. These are a few of the snares of the mind, but more importantly, Dr. Sood teaches us how to escape these pitfalls. Written in a practical fashion, discover how to handle a bad day, how to build curiosity, live deeper, and what limits our compassion. He even sheds light on meditation with the best explanation I've ever encountered. He has shaped it into a handy practice that I can do standing in line, when I'm stuck in traffic, waiting for an appointment or delayed plane. Recapture the empty moments of your day with the exercises in this book. This encyclopedia of the mind offers a wealth of useful exercises and wisdom that you can use immediately. You don't have to read it cover to cover before implementing its principles, but it's so entertaining that eventually you will want to do so at your leisure. Thank you for sharing your skills and compassion with us, Dr. Sood!

A pleasure to read and a wonderful reference!
This is the latest of Dr. Sood’s books. I have found all of them engaging, informative, and life-changing. This one is no exception. With Mindfulness Redesigned, Dr. Sood uses research, personal experiences, and parable to describe the history and practice of mindfulness. He begins by explaining why we struggle with happiness, dissatisfaction, and stress. Then he explores why past mindfulness practices were useful, why they might not be practical today, and what should work instead. All of this information is thoroughly researched and supported by over 1200 scientific sources and citations. This book is not only a pleasure to read, but also a fantastic reference. I will be revisiting it often.

Looking at all the facts about spreading mindfulness
If you are interested in mindfulness, grab this and read it. Take notes. Makes excellent points, especially about the need for better ways to getting people into the practice and ability to be mindful. Dr. Sood reviews evidence that currently too few people get into mindfulness and secure its benefits. Even the Dalai Lama and his monks admit to difficulties!
