Excellent for fine hair & furred dogs/cats. Not loud, easy to use, BUT GET a 3.5 to 4 blade for it for half inch hair!
Really great price on an excellent product that really works for small dogs in particular. We have a Yorkie & making an appointment for her at various doggy hair salons was becoming a real hassle as each seems to take on too much work or suddenly the price went up to astronomical proportions for a hair cut. So we took matters into our own paws/hands & got this shaver after exhaustive readings of reviews & looking at the manufacturer's page. We learned quickly that the plastic thingees aren't as useful as just getting an additional 4.0 or 3.5 or 3.75 blade which translates to 1/2 inch hair on the dog. The big blade that comes with the Andis 21420 is a #10 which is nice but will mow down to the skin if you're not particularly careful, no matter how easy the You Tube instructions make it. There are NO INSTRUCTIONS to speak of with this unit & no amount of complaints to Andis direct has netted us any more. We did not buy the kit with the DVD because you can get your training right from You tube. The only issue is the directions for changing the blade, which doesn't even come with the additional blades..you would think... but no. My significant realized that it is just a slip on & off situation, no need to undo screws or anything & each blade comes with a trimming blade already installed so you don't need to buy an additional trimmer blade like we did. That's more than you will need if you are just doing one dog. All in all an excellent product. We suggest that you DO buy yourself some extra blade oil & some of the cooling oil that they talk about but don't have in the kit. DO buy the kit, because it will hold all of your additional blades & the oil, plus the trimmer in ONE place.

The answer is YES!
UPDATE 8/9: After using this clipper for a while now, I'm very happy with it (despite the price dropping). It took a few times but now I can do both dogs very quickly in one sitting. I don't have a professional grooming table so I do this in the laundry room with the dog on top of the washer. I would highly recommend using a disposable wee pad under them instead of a towel... the cut hairs are very tough to wash out (they seem to just weave themselves into cloth!) ORIGINAL REVIEW: These were the questions I had before buying this clipper: *Does it really work that much better than human clippers? YES *Is it quiet enough that it won't freak out my dogs? YES *Will I be able to handle it well even though I have no professional grooming experience? YES *Is it worth the price tag? YES With two small dogs, I found that it managed to cut through their differing types of fur perfectly. My Papillon mix has a double coat and it sliced through without any problems! And the number #1 guard was the perfect length to use on my Maltese for that "puppy" cut. I have no prior grooming experience so I just watched a bunch of online videos. This clipper seemed to work easily and fit into my hand just fine. It has a ceramic blade and it didn't feel like it got hot for a while (I managed to groom both dogs in one sitting). But since I was using a guard, it wasn't much of an issue. This also has a quiet motor so it didn't freak the dogs out. And unlike the inexpensive human clippers, it doesn't make an abrupt noise when you first turn it on. I received the item exactly as pictured: a purple cutter with 4 guards, small tube of oil and a black case everything fits into. For my two small dogs, I don't feel like I need to buy other blades as the one that comes with it, along with the guards, seem to fit all of my needs right now. Again, I say this with inexperience...just relying on my satisfaction with the end result. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clipper!

Andis pro-animal clipper kit
clippers arrived and looked great! but unfortunately I didn't realise I needed a power converter for the plug! DOH had to spend more on a step down transformer, but after that was sorted I was anxious to start clipping!! My dog is a small shitzu x bichon x mini poodle, very long wooly coat. The hair was long at the time, there were a few snags so I highly recommend a good brush prior to use. I ended up having to cut the knots with no attachments which worked great!! So after that, I began with the number 1 as I wanted a nice short coat. It cut through the hair like a hot knife through butter. I was really impressed! they weren't too noisy but my dog (being his first clip) was very uneasy and wriggled alot. I hope he is better next time. The clippers took a while to heat up, proberly about 10 mins, but I think once I get better at clipping and my dog stands there I could clip fast before they warm up. Overall I'm really happy with the clippers, they are good quality and well made unlike some of the cheap ones I have seen. They work really well and are very sharp. Love the case and attachments. Only reason I gave 4stars and not five was that I had to buy the converter AND because they would have been 5 stars if they had two speeds and a couple of extra attachments. FANTASTIC for price. Highly recommended

One little beast of a machine
We have three fur babies - a big furry one that weighs 120 pounds, a medium furry one that weighs 55 pounds, and a little Shih Tzu who requires hair cuts more often than our human children at the "bargain" price of about $65 per visit. The clippers we had were old, slow, and loud so for the past several years we have had to take them in for their spring/summer cuts (Mississippi summers are just a tad bit warm for a dog to sport a full fur coat). After suffering a mild coronary at the price for grooming all three we decided to break down and get this set due to the good reviews. I could hardly wait to shear the pelt off of the medium sized dog especially. He sheds like crazy and has an undercoat that would give a Chow Chow a good run for its money. To make matters worse, he is a fairly thin dog and has loose, wrinkly skin. Oh, and he is a big chicken so when you come after him with a pair of clippers he shakes incessantly. So basically, he is an amateur groomer's worst nightmare. As any reasonably prudent adult would do, I read the instructions, oiled this puppy up, and was ready to go. The nice, soft hum took me (and the chicken dog) by surprise. He sniffed it and sat down in the grooming spot as if saying, "Go ahead - that one is not so scary!" This bad boy cut through his thick pelt like butter. I checked it several times to make sure it wasn't getting too hot (as some other reviews have complained about) but mine never got hot at all. In 25 minutes I was done and he looked and felt like a soft, velveteen rabbit. His fur was even, smooth, and best of all SHORT!! No more tumbleweeds of fur floating across the hardwood floors in my house, that is for sure! We could not be more pleased with this purchase. I will say this - for a professional groomer, or someone that grooms often, you may want to move up to the stronger (and more expensive) version. This one was perfectly fine for someone like me that only grooms once every 2-3 months, but if I did it frequently I would want something just a little faster/more powerful.

Lacks Power- Blades are dull.
My Wahl was old and needed replacement. Based on the reviews, I decided to give Andis 21420 a try. I was disappointed from the first cut. I have a Miniature Poodle and I like her face cut short. I could not accomplish this with the Andis clippers. The blades were too dull and the blade depth was too high. There is no way to adjust the cutting length of the attached blade. Her hair is in good condition and I just wanted to give her a touch up since she had just been groomed about a month ago, by me. After a very short time, 5 to 10 minutes, the blades became extremely hot and I had to continue to cool them down every 5 minutes or so. There was not enough power to cut the hair and the hair was just pushed along and the hair kept getting stuck in the blades. After many dog treats and lots of frustration we just ended the session with a very bad cut. A usual half hour to 45 minute trim lasted for two hours. I had to resort to my personal family hair clippers (Wahl) to finish the job and try to smooth out the rough spots were the Andis just would not cut consistently. Obviously, I returned the clippers and I would not recommend these clippers to anyone. FYI Amazon makes it incredibly, easy to return items. I shop a lot on Amazon and this is the first time that I have had to return and item, in years, if ever. I never used this return system, however, it is so easy. Thank you Amazon!

Works well once you get used to it, but you may not like the end result...
I had never used animal clippers before I ordered this Andis Clipper Kit. I have a 40-lb dog with a naturally long, thick coat and have been in the habit of getting him clipped 3 times each summer so that he stays cooler. At $50+ per clipping session, the cost adds up. So, I decided to buy these clippers and groom him myself. The first time I used these clippers on my dog, I used a medium comb, which provided an even cut -- but it took forever to complete the job. I spent almost two hours trimming him, and even had an assistant to hold the dog while I trimmed. That was uncomfortable for both the dog and me. The next time, in order to make the trimming session much shorter, I didn't use any of the combs and just trimmed him using the ceramic blade. While using just the blade saves a lot of time, it's very difficult to give a nice, even cut. I inadvertently "scalped" him in several places, and the end result was a terrible-looking grooming job. Yes, I saved some money by doing it myself, but I sure wasn't pleased with the end result! Perhaps with more practice using the clippers I could become more proficient, but I'll never be able to duplicate the quality of a professional groomer. I haven't decided whether to attempt to give him another trim myself or just take him to the groomer and pay the money for a nice-looking summer trim. I now understand why groomers charge what they do!

Andis 21420 clippers vs the 'coat from hell'
Awesome clippers!! If you have a long haired dog that needs to be groomed frequently this clipper kit is a no brainer. We have a 7 yr old Havanese name 'castaƱo' with a 'coat from hell' as one groomer described it. His coat covers the complete range from wavy on his head, course thick straight face, very thick curls (it would cord if we let it) around his neck & shoulder, & it gets even thicker as it goes down his back to his tail. His belly hair is long thin & silky and his legs / feet are very wavy. His hair grows so fast it needs to be cut every 6 - 8 weeks and at $80+ a cut it gets expensive. Several years ago I took a one day grooming course from a professional that covered the basics for the average pet owner. Since then I've been doing his grooming with scissors. A cut, bath & finish would take me about 6 hours so I would spread it over a few days because it was just as hard on me as the dog. Sore hands and back. After a little research, some help from the groomers at our local Petsmart and questions to the Andis online expert I choose the Andis 21420 Pro-Animal Detachable Ceramic Blade Clipper Kit . Amazon price $61, local Petsmart $124 for the same kit. It took about 5 minutes to get the feel for the clippers. I started with a longer comb to practice, then switched to a shorter comb once I decided how long I wanted it. The clippers with the 1/2" comb went through all the different parts of his coat without any hesitation. Even the mats around his tail were no match for the clippers. Start to finish the cut took 1.5 hours and the ceramic blades were warm but never hot. The cut was smooth & even, far better than my scissor cuts. They are very smooth running and quiet, no more sore scissor hands. Castano would have gone to sleep but I kept having to reposition him. I bought the optional blue comb kit and found the blue combs much harder and better quality than the softer black plastic combs included in the kit. Well worth the extra few dollars.

Paid for itself in just 1 use
Upgraded from an old set of human clippers to this one. Works great! We use it on a cocker spaniel and mini poodle. The blade does get warm after a while. I knew this already, but it can be solved by getting an extra blade and keeping it handy. One minor annoyance- the on/off switch is located on the side. Sometimes, I accidentally hit it and switch the thing off. A few tips to using this clipper: 1) If you have a steady hand, I would highly recommend ditching the comb attachments and clipping with just the blade. Cuts like butter this way. Just a warning though, it cuts pretty close without the combs! But then again, I prefer closer shaves. 2) You must oil the blade before use. If you have a hairy dog, you need to re-oil while clipping. 3) Every now and then, stop and brush off the hair that is stuck between the blades. 4) If you are getting extra blades, it's nice to get a #30 as well for closer shaves. It's great for areas like ears, face (for certain breeds), underside, paws and bottom. You can also switch out the default #10 blade and use #5 or #7 - if you like keeping the coat longer in the winter. 5) If you don't want to buy extra blades, you can get a closer shave by clipping against the direction of the coat. 6) Clean the thing after you're done and lubricate with a bit of oil to prevent rust. Overall a great purchase. Paid for itself in 1 use. Good luck and have fun with it! UPDATE as of March 2017: I liked them so much, I bought another one shortly after to keep at a different location so I wouldn't have to keep transporting them back and forth. They work better than the human clippers we had. And both sets are still alive and going strong! A great purchase, still highly recommend this product.
