Spoiled by bad language & sex
I really enjoyed the first book in this series but found this one a disappointment. Too much sex & foul language, not necessary to the story & one is left wondering if this is the common language the author uses in her life. Sorry but won’t be bothering with the next book.

...
This book has good bones, but needs a bit of work.I found myself slightly irritated by the fact that despite the story being set in America with one primary character being British, all of the characters spend the length of the story speaking to each using very British phrasing. They don't sound American at all.It made reading the book so much less enjoyable for me.It just didn't match up. There were also several editing issues that made we wonder if it was self-published.

Don’t write a book set in a city you know nothing about.
This is the third book which I’ve read in this series and my least favorite. It needs to be re-edited by an American. “Fancy” is not a verb here. It’s an adjective. Also, NO American magazine would ever have Christmas cake or Christmas pudding in their December issue. We eat pie and cookies. Also, interns don’t go to meetings and they don’t voice opinions. They get coffee and make copies for actual staff. There’s No such thing as a pastrami sub. Pastrami comes on Rye bread. Hot. She’s gonna spend six months in New York and not eat a dirty water hotdog? Pffft.

Cute/Light
I'll say the same thing I said about The Little Cafe in Copenhagen (another book by the same author). Cute - "is what it is" kind of book. A very quick/light read. And I obviously read two of the books, so liked them enough. But by the end of this one, I found myself shying away from the third - it's a little too light - I'm feeling the need for a little more substance the next go round. But these provided some decent effortless diversion when I was in the mood for just that.

Mediocre at best
I hate writing negative reviews. I read the book in one day and the author should leave herself in England or learn American speech patterns. I struggled with it because it jarred me out of my reading every time. Which would seem like a small thing but every few pages to sometimes every page becomes annoying. I question where her editor was.The story itself was typical with expected end results. It’s a cookie cutter story line.

Too many Britishisms for the "American" characters!
I have loved almost all of the books I have ready by Jules Wake/Julie Caplin... except this one. It was seriously driving me nuts how "British" the American characters were! Seriously needed to be edited by an American. How hard would that have been?!? I hope the author/publisher reads these reviews. We do NOT say "mum" for mom, or "courgette" for zucchini. Todd, a new yorker, would NEVER speak as formally as the character does in this. We do not say "let" the apartment, we say lease. So so so so many inconsistencies that kept pulling me out of the story, and that is my biggest pet peeve about books. This had the potential to be an awesome, lighthearted read. Instead, it was infuriating.

New Yorkers do not talk like that!
I enjoyed this story but as a native New Yorker I found it irksome that the New Yorkers in the book used so many Britsh phrases & terms - New Yorkers do not say "at the weekends" or "sod" or "too right"! No New Yorker has ever said, "Fancy a trip on the Staten Island ferry?" Where are the coulda woulda shouldas? The whatcha doins & yeahs? I'm surprised a NY editor was not employed to check the language - I'd be happy to do it next time for a nominal fee.

A Sweet, Delightful Escape!
I enjoyed this read so much. Todd and Sophie are just perfect for each other and I found myself being so proud of Sophie as she rediscovered herself and the strength she had. I was rooting for Todd as well. There’s one very small criticism I have and that was that the dialogue was a bit incorrect in terms of American vernacular. It’s one thing for Sophie to talk in British vernacular but it felt off when Todd, Wed, or Bella did. Phrases like “Nipping off” isn’t commonly used in the states and being from the states, that part of the dialogue for the American characters threw me off just a little bit. Other than that, it was a fantastic read!

New York, cake and romance
A delicious food-themed romance set in New York featuring one of the characters from her previous book, Sophie.I pre-ordered after finishing the previous book and forgot about it till it appeared on my kindle. Once again I enjoyed escaping, this time to New York, and indulging in memories of the Empire State Building, Staten Island Ferry and Central Park.Sophie, a food writer on a magazine agrees to a job swap in Manhattan. Her apartment is actually in Brooklyn above a bakery owned by Bella. Sophie is escaping London after a break-up and has no desire to become involved with the handsome, charismatic, man-about-town, Todd. Todd has his own jaded views of love and marriage but he is intrigued by Sophie' s friendly teasing, her love of food and her 'Pollyanne' approach to life.

Really enjoying this series
Really like this author's writing. It's cosy, it's clever, I enjoy the food aspect and the characterisation is good. I really like that it's not totally predictable - it doesn't go exactly where I expect. Well edited in general and I've just bought the third one having read the last two in the last few weeks - this is unusual for me as I often find an author samey after two books. Very enjoyable. Romance, friendship and empathy (and lovemaking(!)) and hygge. If you enjoy Maeve Binchy or The Comfort Cafe series by Debbie Johnson you might enjoy these.

Another great book from Julie Caplin
Having read and loved The Little Café in Copenhagen I was looking forward to reading this, the next in the series and I wasn't disappointed. A small community in the heart of New York proved to be an interesting location, proving that large cities are not always heartless, with a great collection of characters. Looking forward to the next in the series, pre-order placed.

Magical!
OK, I'm officially addicted to this series. After falling in love with The Little Cafe in Copenhagen, I was worried this next title wouldnt have quite the pull and verve. But it does. In bucket and spade fulls. To read a Julie Caplin novel is something akin to diving into a decadent hot chocolate topped with the sweetness of marshmallows and the seductiveness of whipped cream. The steamy scenes definitely don't get left outside the bedroom door!!! Looking forward to what Paris has in store...

An Unputdownable Treat
The Little Café in Copenhagen was a tough act to follow (loved it), but I found myself enjoying the second book in this series even more. Julie captures Manhattan and Brooklyn perfectly, with scenes set in all the right places. The heroine, Sophie is someone you find yourself rooting for and Todd is a hero most women wouldn't mind sitting opposite at work, giving them tours of New York and dropping into his cousin's bakery when they're helping out baking cupcakes. This is pure escapism that you won't want to put down.
