Cystitis Unmasked

Extremely informative book
This book was written by Professor Malone-Lee who ran a specialist bladder clinic at the Whittington Hospital in London and also had a private clinic in Harley Street. He was a leading authority on bladder problems which, as he shows in this book, are often misdiagnosed. You can, therefore, have complete trust in what he says. The book is extremely detailed and goes into a lot of medical details which may well be beyond the average reader. It is probably aimed at the medical profession rather than an ordinary person. Nevertheless, if you are having problems of this nature, it is definitely worth a read. You can then go to your doctor with the information you have gleaned from the book, perhaps take the book with you. This book is a mine of information and is invaluable. Highly recommended.

Invaluable read - particularly for medical professionals
This book is incredible. Sufferers of chronic/embedded uti have long tried to get clinicians to listen to them about the pitfalls of the current uti testing method and treatment that is available. But our pleas often fall on deaf ears and we can often be dismissed as suffering mentally rather than physically.Professor Malone-Lee has a wealth of experience in this field (around 40 years!) and this book should help to enlighten other medical professionals as to his findings. The Professor follows the Science in all he does and backs up his statements with data. I truly hope this book brings about the change that is so desperately needed. I’m so confident about his work I’ve purchased two copies of this book to pass onto local medical professionals that failed to treat me correctly. Now a patient at the Harley St Clinic, I finally feel I’m on the road to recovery and I cannot thank the Professor and his team enough for that. They are the light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel for many of us.If you are a medical professional, particularly a GP, I strongly recommend that you buy this book so that you have the necessary knowledge to understand the realities of UTIs and the effects of improper testing and treatment so as to better care for your patients.

Things NEED to change to stop suffering.
I find it interesting and refreshing to read the science and all things medical to do with chronic uti, being a sufferer myself. I felt alone, on the brink of being diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, despite having uti symptoms including nausea and always responded to antibiotics. I then found the chronic uti clinic and I'm on a strong path to being cured for good. This book is amazing. Stupidly short antibiotic courses for utis are leaving people suffering with embedded bladder wall infections & being misdiagnosed with 'painful bladder syndrome ' for which urologists have no answer for why the bladder is even in pain. Its explained in total sense why long term antibiotics need to be used, narrow spectrum ideally. Also they closely monitor you and get blood work done every so often to keep an eye on you. Personally I've had no side affects- nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim & hiprex. Read yourself! :)

A must read for all UTI sufferers!
This a is brilliantly written book accessible to both patients & clinicians! This book illustrates the poor & inaccurate testing currently available for UTI. I had my first ever UTI in feb this year that did not go away - I was told by 5 GPs, A&E doctors, a private doctor & a private urologist that I didn’t not have an infection because my tests were coming back negative. My life changed overnight I was constantly in pain, scared & basically left saying it’s in my mind. As a scientist, I read & researched every academic paper on UTI which led me to Professor’s work & this book. I owe this man so much for putting science & research first & for helping so many suffering women when others would not question the standard testing. I’m in currently in treatment in Harley Street with the correct diagnosis & finally have some hope I will get better!

Essential reading for better understanding of UTIs
An amazing book outlining the brilliant work and research of the late great Professor James Malone-Lee. He left such an amazing legacy through this work and research on how UTIs, an ever increasing and growing public health issue, should be treated and understood. A comforting read for patients suffering with this chronic condition and an essential read for any clinician who treats patients for them.

A brilliant scientific detective story
Malone-Lee writes with style, humour and passion. This is a wonderful book for both the specialist and lay reader. The author draws on history, philosophy, psychology, complexity theory, statistics, evolutionary theory and a deep understanding of scientific methods to weave a brilliant, scientific detective story about a vicious villain - chronic cystitis that appears to resist all conventional and fringe medical treatment. The author describes his team’s battle against the conventional wisdom that often blamed patients for their failure to respond to treatment. He describes how through meticulous research, therapeutic interventions were developed that actually work for patients. This is an uplifting story that needs to be widely shared. It reminds us to keep an open mind, maintain an appropriate level of scepticism about conventional approaches and guidelines, and to listen to the voice of patients who may inconvenience health care professionals by having problems that evade treatment that we ‘know’ should work.

A must read for both urologists and people designated as having interstitial cystitis, etc.
This book deals with how chronic urinary tract infections are misdiagnosed, which leads to much pain and suffering. Chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs) and recurrent UTIs occur annually for millions of American women. Scientists developed the current UTI test in the 1950s on culturing for possible E. coli. Doctors diagnose it as a UTI if the cultured bacteria population is large enough. But in at least 25% of the tests, when the patient has an infection, the test does not show that she has a UTI. When a test shows a negative result, some providers declare that she has no UTI. Instead, she is diagnosed with an overactive bladder or interstitial cystitis and given pain pills or a bladder relaxant. However, current clinicians now have diagnostic tools that reveal that the symptomatic patient almost always has a UTI. Perhaps the clinicians are just treating the patients the way they were taught. By failing to update their diagnostic methods, millions of American women have been misdiagnosed and are now living with chronic UTIs and excruciating pain. The author discusses how his views on UTIs have evolved and how he treats chronic UTIs.
