is the actual gooseneck arm 12" or is it 12" total from the ball on the gooseneck to the bottom of the base?

Gooseneck arm is about 10", flexible part is about 7", add 3" for screw connectors on each end of arm. Entire unit sitting on a table is about 14" from the bottom of the cup holder (2" thick) to the top of the phone holder (2" thick). It does jiggle a little on rough roads but I'm happy with it. It could have been a little longer but it works for me.

Is there a trick to lessen the phone wiggling, or is that to be expected to some degree?

The phone didn’t wiggle as I really tightened the cup holder portion; but, I quit using it as it is in an awkward position in my SUV. It sits too low and I have to look down to see it which can be dangerous.

Will a note 5 fit in the holder ?

It should. It fits my samsung s7 edge and its 6x3 inches.

Can I still plug in an aux cable into my iPhone 6s to play music?

Yes got plenty of room to plug in. The way the holder works it grabs the sides of the ohone and the bottom outside corners at bottom of phone so it cant fall out of holder either. But leaves the bottom speakers free and open and the auxiliary charging port open to be freely accessed Works great. Honest. I would buy another one if i had another vehicle as soon as possible I have tried many others. Such as suction cup kind? Sticky kind, magnetic, air vent, etc. All failed and worked poorly This one works!!!!
