Better than the Magic Lantern series
I actually picked up this book based on the reviews here, and I must say, I was not disappointed. I had previously used the Magic Lantern series of guides on an earlier model, and this book is FAR more informative. My impression of the Magic Lanterns was that they were simply a slightly more detailed version of the Canon camera manual itself. This book, on the other hand, goes a step farther, focusing not only on the functions of the camera itself, but also providing useful information on APPLYING those functions. Lots of information presented in easily-digestible sections, along with full-color photgraphs throughout to demonstrate the particular topics being discussed. This book also contains material that provides a good introduction to novice photgraphers on basic photography concepts like exposure, and provides a good brief intro to beginner and experienced photgrapher alike on digital photography specifically. In short, this book is great for the novice photographer, the novice digital photogrpaher, or the experienced photographer looking to maximize his or her enjoyment and understanding of a sophisticated piece of techinolgoy, the 50D.

A must-have book if you own a 50D
I just recently purchased the Canon EOS 50D Digital Field Guide and am so impressed with it that I am driven to write my first Amazon review. I am still reading the book but so far it has exceeded my expectations. The writing is clear and interesting, the author obviously has both the experience and knowledge to provide great background information and useful tips. I have read the manual and another book on the 50D but I have still learned information about the 50D (and digital photography) that I didn't know. It is a wonderful book, I highly recommend it. I plan on reading it again once I'm done. There is so much to learn and this book really covers the information.

Book comparisons-Feeling like Goldilocks
I ended up buying 3 different books pertaining to the 50D.The first one I purchased was the "Magic Lantern Guides Canon EOS 50D Multimedia Workshop" The instructional DVD video was excellent, however the book itself was way too basic & generic as was the "Taking Great Digital Photos" DVD (which I expected of this DVD). So unfortunately, I felt I still needed a book with more info to it & bought this book by Charlotte K. Lowrie "Canon EOOS 50D Digital Field Guide. It's a great book with lots of info but I found it very difficult to read & follow, I think it's her writing style. Seeing a pattern here? This one to soft, this one to hard, still looking for just right. So I bought Jeff Revell's book "Canon 50D From Snapshots to Great Shots", which I like a lot. I still need to augment it a little with Lowrie/s book but between these two it seems to do the job. I didn't want to spend all this money on the camera & lenses & not be able to use it to it's fullest potential hence purchasing 3 books.

Clear but not inspiring
An accurate, capable, and technical approach to the 50D. But the photo examples are a bit boring in my opinion. I much preferred the Jeff Revel book on the 50D--inspiring photo examples and detailed how-to tips. I am a beginner; perhaps an expert would prefer Lowrie's more detailed and technical style. Revel is a friend of Scott Kelby and his book has the Kelby feel: easy to read and lots of great color examples of what the 50D can do and how to do it.

Exactly what I was looking for.
This field guide was recommended to me by a few fellow photogs. What a great field guide to help me learn my new 50d! It is well laid out and easy to understand. I NEVER would have picked up on half of the tricks & tools my 50d is capable of without this book! (And yes! I have read the owners manual numerous times). Reading the manual that comes with your camera is important. But getting a copy of this field guide will help you sharpen your skills. This Guide in combination with Understanding Exposure will help you build a GREAT base knowledge of your camera and photography in general! Get it! NOW!

indispensible field guide
i love my canon 50d, a sophisticated camera with a myriad of probable functions that i'd rather not memorize and so the guide is most handy and well presented. it's my second book 'cause i left my other in a plane and i'm glad i have it so i can review it often. it goes with me wherever i take my camera and i highly recommend it (better than the canon book supplied with the camera).

Digital Photography
after buying the 50D, I realized that I needed help to get the benefit of the many features of this camera. The Digital Field Guide is providing great info and is the right size for field trips. It has already helped me when doing nature field trips. I would recommend this book as a good aid for the 50D.

Great book
I have not read the book cover to cover yet but so far it has some great information in it.Not really anything that you couldn't find for free on the Internet but I like to have all my information in one place and in my hand when I want it so this was the perfect solution.
