This useful dictionary is perfect to have on hand when you are learning Afrikaans. The only drawback of this particular dictionary is that it doesn't have any pronunciation guides on each word. If you already know some Afrikaans and understand how to pronounce the words it will however be useful to you.I've been using it along with DVDs to look up words that are not explained well. Like for instance I learned to say: "Wat sal jy voorstel?" but I thought voorstel was "recommend" when really it means "propose." The DVD I was watching did not tell me the specific meaning of the word "voorstel."If you are reading anything in Afrikaans this is also quick to use to look up unfamiliar words. So I'd say this dictionary has been useful to me. I just wish it had pronunciation guides for those new to the language. I'm reading the whole dictionary from start to finish to increase my vocabulary.So this dictionary can be used to look up Afrikaans words to understand them or to look up English words to get the translation. Was hoping for a pronunciation key, but the book is still worth it.

In the Afrikaans section, it lists the Afrikaans word and whether it is a noun, adjective, adverb, etc., BUT* it does not give the plural form of that noun* it does not give the attributive form of that adjective* it does not give the past participle form of that verb (some take ge as a prefix or an infix, some don't)* it does give whether a verb is seperable or inseperable* it does not give the comparative form ("more") and superlative form ("most") for adjectives and adverbs.If they had dedicated a few pages to explaining how do those infections, I would have given it a higher rating.If you only want to just find out what a word is and nothing more, you might find this dictionary useful - but you are likely to have access to a better dictionary already.If you are wanting to learn Afrikaans, or have started a textbook or course and want to have a dictionary to go with your studies, there are better dictionaries than this one.

my south african friends don't know many words from this dictionary

Provides exactly what I need. Reading a book which is written in 3 languages - two of which I've rarely spoken / written for almost 3 decades.
