I had my 2011 Outback 3.6R's 5EAT transmission fluid fully replaced at 162k miles by a professional shop with Subaru/Idemitsu ATF-HP. Now, at nearly 170k I decided to just check the fluid level to make sure it was correct (better late than never, AMIRIGHT?!?). Sure enough, it was nearly a full quart low (dipstick read just above the 'cold minimum' indicator hole), at full-hot on a 91F day. I checked the fluid level on a known level surface, per the manual. There's a specific protocol and no need to rehash it here, but said protocol was followed. So, with this verified low fluid level and some research, I found this Valvoline Full Syn Import fluid. It's rated for both Nissan/JATCO Matic-J and Subaru ATF-HP. The Subaru 5EAT transmissions are actually made by JATCO, and supplied to Subaru and Nissan (maybe others as well, like Mitsubishi). Nissan and JATCO specify Matic-J, while Subaru specifies ATF-HP. These two fluid specs are very similar, but it is far easier to find fluids that meet ONLY Matic-J rather than fluids that meet both specs. This full synthetic Valvoline meets BOTH specs. I topped off with 3/4 of a quart (roughly 8% of the total fluid capacity of the transmission; it only holds 10.1qts.... this is a non-trivial fluid deficit). I stopped just shy of the full indicator hole (1-2mm below it). While the transmission wasn't felt to be misbehaving before, it's up-shifting/down-shifting/starting from a stop noticeably smoother. And, there's still zero shudder or slip at WOT up to highway speeds (which happens with most non-OEM ATF fluids). Idling in-gear (drive or reverse) is also slightly smoother. So, not only does this fluid prove to be a good top-off for the OEM ATF, it seems likely that it is actually superior to it for a full-fill.
