How to Play the Flute: A Beginner’s Guide to Learning the Flute Basics, Reading Music, and Playing Songs (Woodwinds for Beginners)

I quit playing flute in high school 44 years ago, and decided to see if I could still play- which I can, but I can't remember how to read music and although I remember the fingering I cannot tell you what note is which fingering. I bought this book to retrain all that, and this book has very good exercises and scales to do just that. I'm very happy with it!

This book explains many of the basics. It does not give the reader mini-lessons with bits to play. This is the book to read BEFORE that book. Mostly, it covers basic notation, how to put together, hold, and maintain an instrument. It also shows basic fingering and the major scales. It’s a quick read that helps if you are self-studying.

Ordered this book and found the information to be great for very, very beginners (like me!). I enjoyed learning more about the flute, and the different types of flutes. I felt the how-to was a little lacking - as photos would have made a great help on correct embouchure placement and shape. Several of the diagrams provided were either cut off slightly due to misalignment, or blurry because they weren't the correct resolution for printing - not a complete loss, but definitely an oversight that makes a book nerd like myself a little anxious. Why four stars and not five? Unlike many other music theory/practice books - this one is in the same format you'd find with a piece of fiction. Meaning you cannot open it and lay it flat, or put it on a stand. It is small (approx. 9x6") and I literally had to crack the spine to use the warmups and songs, and truly mangle the book to make it usable for its intended purpose, and even then, I could barely keep it open. I'd highly suggest that the next edition be put in a format like Essential Elements' publications - ready to be used on a stand. TLDR: +++ Content (good information for a brand new to flute newbie) - - Physical format (small book in rigid spine format, not meant for music stands)

Great flute instrument instructions

It's a good quality book however it implies it will teach you how to play a flute. This book only teaches you the history of flutes and what types of flutes. You have to read it as a genuine book rather than a lesson book. If you want to learn about flutes it is amazing although it will not teach you how to play the instrument.

Great tool for helping teach yourself. Of course it'd be better if you got lessons, but if you have the dexterity and the desire to learn, this is one book that can help you.

i got this for my lady to start teaching herself how to play flute. she hasn't taken the time, but the product itself came in great shape and looks great to me!

I used to play flute in high school and am taking it up again. This book isn't your standard schoolbook learning guide, it actually explains thing and has pictures! Would highly recommend for newbies or returning players.

I purchased a flute after not picking one up in 20 years since grade 9 band! I forgot everything. This book was the perfect refresher course. EGBDF =every good boy deserves fudge! How could I forget?! embouchure And sheet music refresher was key.
