the book is good, kindle edition is not
I like the book itself. The author gives a lot of clear and necessary explanations in general, and there are many step-by-step demonstrations. I like the style of the artist, it is representative, but not photocopic , and involves personal approach which, in my opinion, is very encouraging and stimulating. But I DON'T recommend to buy a Kindle edition, because the pictures are so small there that you won't be able to use them as a reference. I had to search similar pictures on Internet to work on the projects. So it would be better to buy a paperback.

A beginner's must have
If you're searching for a book to learn about colored pencil techniques, this one is a must have. It talks about technique, color , etc etc, and also explain what goes where on colored pencils . And the drawings , despite not being as realistics as those from Colored Pencil Painting Bible: Techniques for Achieving Luminous Color and Ultrarealistic Effects , they're quite good and realistic . Also, she takes time on explaining what goes where, not like other books who says "i used this , this and this color on those areas and we got THAT" .For me who doesn't have much idea on where to begin with colored pencils, it's a great book!

Title is misleading
I bought this book because I thought it was for watercolor pencils due to the word “painting” in the title. It isn’t. Other than that, it’s OK.

Good basics.
This book covers all the basics. I felt the step-by-steps left out a few things. I have the Kindle edition and some of the reference photos were missing. But, all-in-all, a good reference.

Mixed feelings
While the author renders lovely drawings, and offers all the basics on pencils, paper, etc., a beginning student might find the step by step projects frustrating, as they will not be able to achieve the look of the author's examples. No matter how i tried to emulate the dark shades shown, it was impossible to recreate the examples, and i am an intermediate artist at minimum. The burnishing techniques using turpinoid turned the work to mud...a great deal more instruction needs to be given on this technique. Beginners would be better served by working with Janie Gildow's books, tutorials and dvds...less chance of becoming discouraged. It was a little like trying out a recipe for a wonderful dish, only to find that a key ingredient has been omitted, and the dish cannot be recreated.

Good artist but not for a beginner
The artist is talented but lack the ability to instruct well. Although the step by step demonstrations are appealing, once you start you realize the artist did not include proper instructions. Therefore, don’t try to do the demonstrations unless you know color pencils and have good drawing skills. It would only frustrate beginners. Also, the majority of illustrations are small and of poor quality. A limited number of larger images were included at the end.

Wonderful and essential advice.
Perfect for beginners. Great for understanding how and why you draw the ways you do for certain effects. Great price as well.

“Ok”book
Some good ideas but I was disappointed that after telling you which colours to use, the author didn’t follow up with which colour goes where. Also no idea how much pressure to use or what strokes to do. Eg. Circular or lines. I think for a beginner this is frustrating. I wanted to achieve these tutorials but found it difficult as the advice was confusing and not accurate enough in its information.

The joy of using coloured pencils.
Brilliantly written instructions and very easy to understand. I found this book really useful because it my first attempt with pencil art. The colours of photographs were great and the trouble was my colours seemed quite insipid beside them. I will be using this book for some time because I am really enjoying the experience of working with coloured pencils. Thank you Veronica Winters for writing this book.

An informative read
Yes enjoyed the projects to do. Worth the investment, I have been using fabor castell in preference to prisma colours. Think fabor are better.
