Great winter shell
I bought this shell with winter alpine activities in mind. It's perfectly designed for that purpose. The softshell blocks wind like a champ, and the DWR also repels water really well. Perfect for light drizzle and snow, will not work in a storm or pouring rain though, then again that's not what most softshells are designed to do. The inside has a light fleece lining which provides plenty of warmth. I'm 5'10" and around 170lbs and the medium is perfect for me. It's a pretty trim fit for me but I can fit a baselayer and a thin jacket underneath this jacket. The cut of this jacket is also great for climbing but some people may find it annoying: the sleeves are on the longer side, great if you need to reach overhead to swing your ice axe. The torso is also shorter, so it is less likely to get caught in a climbing harness or pack hipbelt. Worn casually, this jacket is actually very flattering. In my opinion this is a great shell, especially at this price.UPDATE: just wore this jacket on an early December hike in the Colorado Rockies. In the open tundra wind was around 30mph with windchill around -10C. I had a synthetic tshirt as base layer and thin merino blend midlayer, with the OR Transfer jacket as my outer layer. All throughout the hike I was completely comfortable, not too cold nor hot. I could feel the force of the wind pushing against me but I did not feel even a hint of the cold bite of the wind. This jacket did an admirable job in blocking the wind. With the zipper zipped all the way up it covered my mouth and chin comfortably. The inside of the zipper is also fleece lined so it will not rub against your skin. I can't say enough good things about this jacket. This is the perfect layer for winter aerobic activities, even in adverse weather. Oh and did I mention it also looks really good?

I want this to love this jacket
I want this to love this jacket, but there are two things I don't like about it. First, the fit is a bit too large - I'm 6'1", 180 lbs, 36.5" chest, 36" arm length, and the large is a bit too large. The arms are a bit baggy, slightly too long and the chest/stomach is large enough to layer two down jackets underneath. Also, the body length is a bit too short and baggy, it has a waist cinch, but it doesn't work too well. The hood is great, fully adjustable and has a nice brim that works great for keeping the rain off.The second thing I don't like is the breathability...I've worn it in -1F weather for 1-2 hours before with only a midweight Underarmor baselayer under it and it kept me warm shoveling the driveway. But, it didn't breathe at all and by the time I finished, the inside lining was soaked. That being said, the water resistance is great - I've worn it kayaking in the rain several times and it kept me totally dry.If OR could make it a bit more breathable and sized a bit differently I'd love the jacket

Good value shell jacket though cut small
This was a nicely priced shell jacket. The quality of the material and the manufacturing is obvious. It was surprisingly warm for the weight. It looks great too. Overall, I am happy I purchased it.Now the drawbacks: It is cut small. I'm 6'3" tall , 235 lbs, athletic build and the size I usually buy for a jacket is XL. Well when I received the jacket and tried it on I felt like I was suffocating. I gave it to my 18 y/o son who is usually a L and it fit him well. I purchased a second jacket in XXL and it fit me much better. The second issue... I was doing something physical while wearing it and was sweating. I took it off when I came home and hung it up. 3 hours later it was still damp inside. I'm not sure if this was appropriate but I thought I would mention it.

Better than others
Bought this after purchasing my wife the women's version. Really nice jacket and good in-between weight. It has a nice light fleece lining that suits colder temps. The hood is a plus.I generally run a medium, but the torso on this is an athletic cut and so I moved up to the large- sleeves are still an ok length. I'm 5'9", 170 lbs. If I get over 180, I bet this jacket will be uncomfortable. My biggest complaint is that the sleeve inner diameter is a little small and so if you have a bulky sweater on underneath, they'll pull the sleeves up to your elbows.

A yes for Outdoor Research
Except for the way the fabric bunches up when the cuffs are tightened, the Transfer is a well designed and constructed jacket that is good at blocking wind and repelling light mist. A noticeable wrinkle across this jacket's back is hopefully not caused by a fabric flaw but instead from folding while in storage.

Great for cooler days
I bought two of these jackets due to an error by another company, but with how much I loved the jacket I kept the other as a backup. The jacket is fleece lined, so if it is humid out the jacket will get very warm very fast. On less humid and cooler days this jacket is great, it breaths and it keeps you dry. It is made very well, and I do not know if I will even be using the "back up" for I think I would have to get this jacket hooked on something sharp for it to tear. I usually use the jacket as a casual jacket but hiking would be great and it is pretty light.

Great jacket I purchased the XL but got a Large
Great jacket I purchased the XL but got a Large. The large was too small so I sent it back. I did hiw ever find it cheaper someone else and got the xl which fits perfect. It's a bit small for a xl but fits me exactly the way of like it. I'm 6 1 and weigh 215.
