Starring Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, The Last King of Scotland) and Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty). The Mighty Celt uplifts and charms. Young Donal, growing up alone with his mother, Kate, works after school for Good Joe, a local greyhound trainer. As Donal's talent with dogs becomes apparent, he strikes a deal with Good Joe to own a promising greyhound, The Mighty Celt, if he can train it to win three successive races. Meanwhile, each of their lives is profoundly affected by the reappearance of O, an enigmatic figure from the past. Good Joe clearly dislikes O, hating all that he represents, and resents the growing closeness of Donal and O-a friendship that worries Kate. When Good Joe reacts to the growing relationship between O and Donal by reneging on his deal, Donal is forced to learn some harsh lessons about life.

A wonderful, feel good story!
What can I say. This movie is one you will enjoy over and over again. The cast is fabulous. Robert Carlyle is my favorite actor of all time, and true to form, his performance is perfect. He is "O", and Gillian Anderson is a wonderful Kate. Tyrone McKenna plays her son Donal and he gives an inspiring performance. There are sad moments but after all , that's life. Ken Stott, Good Joe, plays a part in their lives, he's not the nicest guy. I don't want to give the story away, but this is a story about real people, true to life about human relationships, life in Northern Ireland and it will stir your emotions.

well paced, good character development
nice film, simple story, so compact. every scene has a role to play, nothing just tossed in to fill it out. The bad guy is really bad, one-dimensional nasty, cruel, which is a bit of a weakness of the script. but the ending is not quite the disney end one might have expected. the acting was excellent all around, and the pace was quite good. nice buildup of the characters, and their past associations.

Great movie with Gillian Anderson and Robert Carlyle on a tough subject. Done well.
I watched this before, late at night, on the IFC Channel, and really wanted to see it again. I loved it the first time and again this time. As an animal activist and lover, I found the one scene of animal cruelty very hard to watch. But it was necessary to set up the ending, and to provide the necessary glimpse into the dark heart of "Good Joe." I've never seen Gillian Anderson doing an Irish accent, and she does it well enough that I'm not sure what her real accent is. Same with Robert Carlyle, also an excellent actor. The boy playing Donal was top-notch as well.I suspect we'll be seeing more of him in the future. This is a movie that I'm likely to watch over and over, so I really ought to go ahead and buy it. Some of the other reviews said that it was difficult to follow without subtitles, and I'd have to agree. Fortunately I did have them, but would have been in trouble otherwise.

Real and startling
I bought this because I'm on a quest to own all of Robert Carlyle's movies and shows. But I've watched it over and over again because I truly love it. Somehow, Mr. Carlyle is at his best when he's defending a child, and that's certainly true here. His "dad" instincts come through loud and clear, and he just makes me want to cry sometimes with his fearless ability to show vulnerability and love. Gillian Anderson is wonderful as the crusty mom with all her walls up, and her young son is just....wow. Beware that there is a scene of extreme animal cruelty, so if that's going to put you off, be careful. But that's only one small scene, and it sets up what follows, so grit your teeth, animal lovers, and get over yourselves. I also loved the accents here - whether Mr. Carlyle is doing a movie set in Sheffield, or Scotland, or Ireland, or Maine, or Fairy Tale Land, or Outer Space, he manages to sound authentic. I'll just state it clearly: I could watch him order lunch and be enthralled.

Could've been a family film
I loved this one for the simple fact that I love Robert Carlyle. It seems as though no matter what he plays in, the part always seems to fit him like a glove. While I enjoyed the concept of this movie: boy loves dog, dog wins as underdog, and everyone lives happily ever after. It just isn't so. Not to spoil the ending but the perfect ending never happens. I would've loved to have seen less severe profanity and outright violence. There's good lessons for children in the film but do to the nature of the script, it is definitely not kid friendly. Not to mention, the main child character smokes throughout. All in all, I liked it; I just wished I could share it with my family. It's a bit like a dysfunctional Lassie.

Difficult movie to watch at times but realistic unfortunately.
This was a pretty rough movie with some bad language and abusive animal scenes. It was difficult to watch at times but the storyline came together well in the end.

Great coming of age story
Such a heart warming coming of age story. Gillian Anderson and Robert Carlyle are fantastic in it, while Tyrone McKenna really shines as young Donal. Wanting nothing more than to train his greyhound without the influence of God Joe whose sees the dogs as nothing more than a quick way to make cash.

You MUST be tough
I was told that this has a happy ending. It sort of has, but it is very tough to watch. If you are a dog lover let alone a Greyhound lover you may well cry your eyes out! Be warned...
