Who Was Frederick Douglass?

A book EVERYONE should read!
A review from my 3rd Grader--I like the book Who Was Frederick Douglass because it has sad parts and happy parts. The book teaches you to never give-up. It tells the story of how Frederick was a slave, ran away, learned to read and write, and made a great family with five children. It makes you think about how unfair and cruel life can be. Douglass was a great man born into slavery. He couldnβt make decisions about his life because he was powerless. He ran away from slavery and fought for the rights of all slaves.

Always good to read
It was informative and very good for a fifth grade report on his great achievements. Will be buying more to educate our children properly in history.

Good story, but too many pics
Like the story. There was a big picture almost on every page so not as much reading as I would have liked at that level

brave and persevering young man is role model for all our lives....
My grandson Zazu and I love this very detailed, historically nuanced book. He is almost 7 but is able to feel and admire the courage and power of Douglass' character in the face of continuing racism and extreme hardship. I am proud of his response and identification with the nobility of Frederick Douglass.

Glorifies slavers
As a story, it is easy to follow, but the author demonizes Frederick's aunt and grandmother, but makes these slavers seem like angels that gave him a better life. I had to explain to him why his grandmother left him and took him into slavery because the author failed to mention that as a slave she had no choice. The author wrote that Mrs. Auld taught Frederick to read but she did not. She taught him the alphabet and he taught himself to read. I could not read this with my son without stopping along the way to fact check and tell him the truth about slavery.

Great Book.
This book was very informative. Though I have some knowledge of Frederick Douglass life, the book gave even more prespective. I found facts not previous known by me nor mentioned in other books I have read. I read this book to my children and they did not want me to stop. I think they walked away with some valuable information as well about Mr. Douglass as well as a few life lesson. I definitely recommend this book for all to read.
