Heroin is the Worst Thing to Ever Happen to Me

The Hidden America
Alicia Cook has once again, made me think and cry. Her personal experience and family story has brought her to this point and she shares others people's stories who have battled addiction, had loved ones go through addiction and passed away and survived. There are also stories of people and families who have mental illness and have become addicted to their prescribed medication. This collection of wonderfully written essays is a must read. I, myself, have not experienced what these people and families have gone through, but, as a human living on this planet, and a mother to a young child, I feel that reading this book brings more understanding to this huge problem we have in America. It truly could happen to any of us. The more we reach out and help our neighbors who are suffering, the more we can have healthy and happier people. This shouldn't be hidden or shameful. This is something as people we can all get behind. To help those who need help and not judge. I will be reading these stories to my daughter, sooner then later. If you have someone in your life who needs help, this book also offers websites and information. I recommend this book to parents, teachers, clergy.... anyone who wants to learn about everyday Americans and their personal stories on addiction.

If you've ever loved or love someone to this horrible family disease this book is for you
I was first introduced to Alicia Cooks writing when my son passed away last year from a heroin overdose. I was amazed when I read her words in her blogs. She spoke the things that I felt in my heart but had not been able to verbalize. This book heroin is the worst thing to ever happen to me has so many wonderful thoughts and I have learned so much about the addiction, which I really believed I knew so much about already. Many many things that I wish I had known before my son passed away as I probably would have handled the whole situation quite a bit differently. Alicia speaks from the loss of her own cousin and not from her being an addict herself. Her book actually gave my husband the voice to get up and speak at a forum in our area about heroin addiction something he had not verbalize to anyone other than me. I hope that anyone who has loved and or lost an addict will consider purchasing this book.

This book was so beautifully written and the stories are so heartbreaking but eye opening. Whether you are someone who is affected by heroin or knows someone who is, or even if you have no affiliation to it at all, this book is worth the read.

Moving & Powerful
This book is filled with stories of heroin from both from the family members point of view and the person who has addiction. It's also filled with resources in the footnotes...which is so helpful for people who are new to this epidemic. Alicia is such an inspiration and force in this area. I highly recommend to anyone dealing with addiction, has a family member who has addiction, or everyone who doesn't understand addiction.
