Lucas Oil 10279 Engine Oil Stop Leak - 1 Gallon

This product has been negatively reviewed far too many times, and I felt compelled to write a review on it. I have used this product on 3 cars with oil leaks, and my family has used it on their cars as well. My family has had great success with minor oil leaks, and 2 of my 3 cars I have used this on resulted in their oil leaks ceasing completely. My other car turned out to be a decent sized crack in my oil pan gasket, which explains why throwing some Stop Leak at it didn't solve my issue. This product helps greatly to repair old, hardened seals, but it doesn't falsely advertise to bring about miraculous results in moderate to major issues. My point is, this product works extremely well for it's intended purposes, and I feel that all of the negative reviews should be taken with an grain of salt. It would be spectacular to hear, from the negative reviewers, what sort of issues ended up being diagnosed in the cars this product didn't help. I'm by no means trying to put down the negative reviewers, but it does get a bit frustrating reading reviews on Amazon like "Put it in my car, didn't work, still leaking, crap product" or "I contracted a flesh-eating bacteria, and this 'highly rated' Neosporin didn't work. Don't waste your time. 1 star. Booooooo!!!!" Lucas Stop Leak is a great product for it's intended purposes, has been used and trusted by amateur and professional mechanics for years, and fully deserves a solid 5 stars.

I’m a Certified Auto Tech as well as Hyundai Master Technician with over 12 years of auto tech experience. I have seen it all used it all so many products claiming to stop leaks and improve fuel mileage and boost octane blah blah blah. Lucas stop leak actually works. Now you can’t expect it to work on a mechanical failure like rotted oil pan and broken gasket but it will stop or slow down seals and gaskets that are drying out or starting to fail. Most oil leaks are from going over your oil change intervals where the oil loses its additive properties and causes seals and gaskets to dry oil and crack. I find using Lucas stop leak with a decent high mileage semi synthetic or full synthetic oil is where it works best. Do not do what you could with older cars and use 10w30 or 20w50 oils thinking cuz it’s a thicker weight it will help. You will only damage your engine. Use the recommend viscosity or u can even go from a 5w30 to a 0w30. If in colder climates like myself in CT in winter I go with a 0w20 or 0w30 in my Acura with Lucas stop leak for better cold starts as this is wear most of engine wear occurs. So a thinner cold oil weight helps it circulate faster and oil pressure to rise faster protecting ur engines internals faster. With using Lucas I go 7500 miles on my oil changes on my 07 Acura TSX with 127k miles and the oil always comes out still clean a light brown. Had a small oil leak when purchased at 63k miles and has not gotten worse since the first oil change I did. I swear by Lucas products the fuel additive top end lubricant is also amazing and adds 2mpg on average to my gas mileage as well as a better cleaner running engine.

does not work like it use to

I have a 2016 international prostar with a cummings engine ixs. It had a front engine seal leak. I added this at my last oil change. It took about two weeks and it stopped leaking oil. Yes I was surprised because I added only one gallon, not to mention that I really didn't think it would work. My leak was so bad it was oil was blowing on my right steer brake, this has save me some time.I have 960000 miles on my engine, trying to hold out until a rebuild .

Sticky stuff works great definitely recommend for minor leaks

Well, I bought this because a mechanic put synthetic oil in my friend's 99 Buick LeSabre that had never had synthetic oil. The engine had 175,000 miles on it and never has seen synthetic oil. After running the synthetic oil for about 5,500 miles, a few drops were visible here and there. So, I figured that changing the oil back to organic oil and putting some of this in would fix the problem. I bought this in the winter, but I waited until we got hot weather to use this since I don't know how this will work during -0 degree F starts since it looks very thick. So after changing the oil and filter (using dinosaur oil), I put the whole quart in (I did not overfill). I figured that a 16 year-old engine with 180,000 miles might need to have all the o-rings and seals rehydrated (if that is what you want to call it. The GM 3800 series II stopped dripping the occasional drop after about 1 week. I will take it to the carwash to pressure wash the bottom side of the engine and degrease it, just to see if there is any new oil. But so far, the oil pressure does not seem any different and the oil stopped dripping. So take it from me, putting synthetic oil in an engine that has a lot of miles is not the end of the world. The mechanic put synthetic oil in it because there was the manifold antifreeze leak that could have gotten in the oil. So just in case, he used synthetic once he fixed the antifreeze leak and changed the oil. I do think that the synthetic oil cleaned out some deposits inside the engine. But it only started to leak a few drops, this oil treatment seems to have fixed the problem. I will try and see what happens after the oil is changed again. And, perhaps some can tell me if this would have been OK to use in winter, it sure was thick!

I have a car with 180k miles on the ODO. The valve cover was leaking but it was not a major problem so I thought this might be a quick fix. To lend some perspective, my leak was not bad enough to leave drops on the floor but one bank of cylinders (it is a V6) clearly showed oil leaking and I could smell it when I parked my garage. I use 5w30 weight Mobil-1 and my car is a 2004 Lexus ES330. I really did not want to remove the valve cover to replace the gasket so I thought this might work especially since there were so many favorable reviews. Be warned, this stuff is like "motor honey." It is very very thick. One bottle went into the crankcase and after 6000 miles I degreased the engine and checked the aluminum head; sadly there was no change and fresh oil is still seeping from the valve cover gasket. Basically, it did nothing for my leak. I worry about the effect of using such a thick compound in the crankcase so I probably won't buy it again. I might work for very small leaks but the lesson here is that there is no quick cheap fix for mechanical wear and tear. Given the high viscosity, I would not recommend it for modern cars that use light weight 0w20 or fuel saving motor oil.

Usefulness/Appearance/Fun Factor: ***** (5 stars) I have started using this for all older engines (>10 years or >100,000miles). I've always had older cars, and for most, at some point there will be small oil leaks around the oil pan or filter housing or head gasket. I started using this with one of my older cars at about 110,000miles and it's now at about 135,000miles and is oil free. Have not noticed any diff in mileage. Maybe engine is a little bit quieter? Not sure, but it's not louder. Will continue to use!

I've used Lucas Oil products for years and swear by them. I just recently bought a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 HD with a Cummins diesel and the mechanic I took it to for an inspection told me the engine had multiple leaks (didn't specify their severity). I just did my first oil change and substituted 2 quarts of oil for the Lucas Engine Stop leak and the engine is loving it. I will deep clean the engine and see if there's an improvement with the leaks. In future oil change I will substitute 1 quart of oil for this product as recommended by Lucas.

Works great

I had a very slight oil leak and this product solved the issue after a couple of days of driving. It's not a permanent solution but so far no more leaking. Not sure how this would perform on more serious leaks.
