I love the quality photos, clear descriptions and not just what parts to use, but how to use them for which ailments. I also love the historical First Nations references pulling in generations of wisdom to the scientific properties. It is a great combination to trust that it works, and also understand why. I'm still a bit nervous about dosages or quantities needed to affect the desired outcome, but am happy with this beautiful start.

Good book to have for the amateur herbalist. Very informative - not just on plant identification, but how to prep, dry and craft your herbal remedies.It's my go-to when I see an unknown plant, the pictures in the book are very helpful, as well as the physical descriptions!Plus, not only does it tell you the plant's medicinal properties, there's also helpful recipes at the end of each plant ID, including a chapter on how to make your own remedies, such as: salves, teas, tinctures, elixirs and bitters, etcI highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about herbal remedies.

I bought it gently used and it's great! It goes over everything, and I mean everything for herbalist work. I live in interior Alaska so this book has been great, as I'm recognizing so many plants I now know that I can use! It goes over plant history, medicinal and food uses, geography, and even spiritual aspects. Would recommend!

This is the most comprehensive herbal book I have ever read. Not only is the Materia Medica well written with beautiful color photos, the recipes provided are well suited to the herb's nature, and the directions on medicine making are easy to understand. What I appreciate most in this book is the extensive information in the reference section. Herbal charts, historical figures in the world of herbalism, botany lessons, glossary of terms, and even a section on how to start your own business are included in this marvelous book. While many of the plants do not grow in my corner of the world (Arizona), I have learned a great deal from this book and admire the meticulousness that the author used in putting this amazing book together.I highly recommend this book to novice and expert alike, no matter where you live. There is plenty to be learned in these pages.

comparing this book to my collection of every book on northern plants i can lay my hands on: outstanding book. the content combines folk wisdom and basic science for realistic snd trustworthy information. the combination of generous color photos and botanical sketches makes it a snap to identify details that are essential to field identification. the back section has the best charts i have seen in any book for quick reference or cross checking by species or by medicinal property. my new favorite reference for northern plants

This book is really well done and is a valuable tool for anyone living or exploring the northern boreal forests of Canada. The book includes information on plant identification, location, medicinal uses and recipes. If you are in doubt you may be able to borrow this book from your local library first. I borrowed it twice then decided to just purchase my own copy that I now take with me into the bush. I have another book on herbal medicine that I find compliments this one very well. The Northern Boreal is great for plant identification, location and harvest information while the other provides more detail on medicinal uses. Overall I really enjoy this book and highly recommend.

"Fool proof". This book is well worth its weight in gold if you ask me. It includes descriptions, habitat and range, plant parts used, havest time .... so much info. Herbs, berries and trees are in this book. Has medicinal preparation recipes and food recipes as well. Also includes reference for botanical terms, herbal constituents, medical action of plants and information charts. This is what you need to start !
