Concept-Based Inquiry in Action: Strategies to Promote Transferable Understanding (Corwin Teaching Essentials)

Essential for pyp teachers
Really informative and practical overview of concept based learning, especially for those teaching at IBPYP schools. Really helped me understand how to use conceptual learning to guide student inquiry. Some of the strategies were review but the initial stages of concept based inquiry and the planning sections were very, very helpful.

Difference between inquiry based and concept based inquiry learning
I have always be curious about the inquiry based learning system and this book explains in a fair amount of detail about Inquiry based learning - from structured to open inquiry and the difference of concept base inquiry learning. There are seven phases to concept based inquiry - Engage, Focus, Investigate, Organize, Generalize, Transfer and Reflect. And to promote a culture of concept base inquiry, students are encourage to adopt the 3 frames of mind i.e. Open-mindedness, Evidence-mindedness and Persistent-mindedness. The book then goes into the approaches, techniques and ideas to pursue the cause for concept-based inquiry learning. Most fascinating insights and thoughts into providing teachers with the aids to get the students into concept-based inquiry learning.

Detailed and instructive
"Concept-Based Inquiry in Action: Strategies to Promote Transferable Understanding (Corwin Teaching Essentials)" by Carla Marschall and Rachel French offers detailed, instructive information. The authors explain the "Concept-Based" inquiry, how it works and the strategies to implement. At times, the information seems quite familiar and at other times, the information seems fresh and new. I like that mix and the presentation which engages and doesn't try to get weighed down in theory which makes the ideas and concepts workable in a real world setting.

A bit underwhelmed
This isn't bad - in fact, it's decent. The writing is clear and concise, the concepts solid and the topic pertinent. My 'complaint' (if you want to call it that) is the feeling of redundancy while reading. It starts off strong but quickly begins to feel like the same thing is repeated over and over. I get the idea - just wish this was taken into greater depth.

Lively and focussed book.
It is a lively and focussed book on Concept-Based Inquiry with an overwhelming number of ideas about strategies and their attributes. The intended audience is for teachers who are preparing to facilitate students. Everything is well organised and spelled-out for those kind of people. I, on the other hand, bought the book as a matter of self-study and improvement, and to deepen understanding of concept learning. I probably could have done with a less plain and more articulate level of understanding - I almost have to read several pages just to understand one idea in all it's finery. So, for me, the text is slower than I could have coped with. None the less, I feel the authors have done a consistently admirable and animated job in this presentation.

A "Must-Read" for IB PYP Teachers
A great blend of the theory and purpose behind concept-based instruction and the practical tools to make it happen. It will be a very valuable resource for teachers and curriculum coordinators, whether you are new to concept-based inquiry or a veteran looking for some new ideas and inspiration. The visual notes provided great summaries of the key ideas and the videos clips of concept-based classrooms brought it all to life.
