Alva Duo - Stereo Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Phono Stage/Pre-Amplifier - Lunar Grey

I am really impressed with this preamp. It’s doing every thing that it’s supposed to do. Combining my Denon DP3000NE with an Ortofon Quintet Blue MC cartridge the sound was more than enjoyable. Highly recommended! Just make sure that it’s all setup correctly, from connecting to the right inputs, cartridge setup warts and all.

I was unsure about this due to the capacitive loading of the Duo already being 100pf, and only having 200pf to play with when using my AT-540ml, however with careful selection of phono cable from deck to phono stage it is possible to get close to, or even under this figure. My old NAD3020a has a great phono stage, however the Duo add a lot more width and it sounds although a veil has been removed from the music. Prefer the Duo to the Project Tube Box S which I also trialed. Headphone amp is good, although a touch thinner sounding than I would like. I use Grado SR80 which seem to suit it nicely, although using the headphone socket on the NAD gives a much richer sound.

This amplifier is a thing of beauty. It's not a weird shape, like some. Instead it is just an understated and elegant design. The quality of the sound is utterly awesome. The crispness and clarity of the middle and highs produce a sound that feels comfortable and defined, but without a sense of tinniness. The power of the lows will give even the deepest rumbling bass its moment without a hint of boom. I fully understand what the rave reviews of this amp are all about. I am completely delighted.

Connected this AMP and worked straight out of the box. Bought and tried multiple other pre phono amps they were all much cheaper but they were rubbish or unreliable. The Cambridge produces clear, precise and powerful output, excellent timing and spacing. No MM/MC dispswitches just a nice front button to press to select. Very happy they bring the best out of the vinyl. Not heard sound like that since my pre-digital setup in the 90's.

Great sounding phono stage. Only let down by the not so great headphone performance. I bought it so that one day I might adventure into the world of MC cartridges.

Well packaged with two types of power cable for UK and Europe. It seems well designed. In operation it does the job that of correctly following the RIAA standard, important to bring out all information in the groove.

I don't have a huge comparison list of other phono stages to go against, but to my ears, this is an excellent 'budget' pre-amp for a moving magnet cartridge. I've got this running from a Technics SL1200 & AT VM740ML cart, using a Blue Jeans cable. I'm passing RCA > TRS from the Cambridge into a USB ADC/Audio Interface. The highest compliment I can give is that is appears clear, well-defined, and basically transparent. I could easily hear the difference between this phono stage and a Pro-Ject S2. Note: Check the review on AudioScienceReview for more detailed measurements. The only let down seems to be headphone output (not an issue for me when I use my ADC's output) and possibly more noise with MC carts.

Nach langer Recherche habe ich mir sowohl den "kleineren" SOLO also auch den DUO zugelegt. Ausschlaggebend war für mich, dass ich einen Pre-amp gesucht habe, der einigermaßen qualitätiv so entwickelt wurde, dass man dafür nicht noch extra ein Tauschnetzteil kaufen muss. Kurzum: einen Pre-Amp der nicht brummt und das bitteschön mit dem hauseigenen Netzteil. Dieses ist in diesem Fall integriert und erweist sich auch nach nun bereits längerem Betrieb als brummfrei (dies gilt für den SOLO gleichermaßen). Die Materialanmutung ist sehr gut und wirkt hochwertig und für meinen Geschmack sehr gefällig. Allein der Lautstärkendrehknopf für den Kopfhörer-Betrieb erweist sich haptisch dann nicht ganz so wertig, da dieser aus Kunststoff besteht (für mich aber kein wirkliches Problem, denn optisch fällt dies nicht auf). Ich betreibe den Pre-Amp an einem restaurierten DUAL CS 621 mit wechselnden Tonabnehmern (Audio Technica VM760slc, VM750SH, VM740ML). Die Kette zum Pre-Amp wurde durch ein angepasstes Cinch-Kabel auf die empfohlene Lastkapazität der Tonabnehmer (100 – 200 pF) hin optimiert und beträgt ca. 170 pF (inkl. Tonarmverkabelung, Cinch-Kabel und Pre-Amp, welcher 100pF aufweist). Gehört wird das Ganze über DALI Oberon 7 Lautsprecher, die wiederum an einem 2005er JVC Verstärker hängen (der den gerinsten Einfluss auf die Klangfarbe in dieser Kette hat). Im direkten Vergleich zum SOLO erweist sich der DUO im MM-Betrieb als die bessere Alternative. Der DUO unterscheidet sich nicht nur durch die zusätzliche Anschlussmöglichkeit eines MC vom SOLO, sondern wohl auch durch die höhere RIAA-Kurvengenauigkeit. Und das hörbar! Keine (zumindest für mich wahrnehmbare) Verfärbung des Klangs, sondern eine klare, neutrale Wiedergabe der Quelle, so wie es ja auch vom RIAA Standard gedacht ist. Hier hat der kleinere SOLO eine leichte tiefenbetonung bzw. hört sich da im direkten Vergleich in den unteren Mitten einfach nicht ganz so neutral an wie der DUO. Warum dies so gemacht wurde? Keine Ahnung, aber so so ist der DUO (leider) auch die bessere Alternative für Menschen, die keine MC-Tonabnehmer besitzen. Kurzum: Bisher bin ich sehr zufrieden mit der Wiedergabequalität. Es gibt durch das integrierte und sehr gut abgeschirmte Netzteil kein Brummen. Da wurde das von den Ingenieuren wohl zu Ende gedacht... Allerdings kan ich bei meiner Rezension nur für die MM-Wiedergabe sprechen, da ich die MC-Wiedergabe bisher nicht getestet habe. Wer einen schönen Pre-Amp (OK, Geschmackssache) mit neutraler Wiedergabe/Frequenzgang ohne nervigem Netzteilwechsel in einer noch vertretbaren Preisklasse sucht, wird sicher mit dem DUO fündig werden. Zumindest bekommt man neben der höheren RIAA-Treue auch noch die Option für einen MC-Anschluss. P.S.: Übirgens liegt das bei der 1-Stern Bewertung eines anderen Users bemängelte "Knacken" beim Aufsetzen des Tonarms bei DUAL-Plattenspielern NICHT am Pre-Amp, sondern wohl eher an verschmutzten Kontakten des Kurzschließers oder ggf. auch an der Kontaktplatte des Tonabnehmers. Hier sollte man schon bei den technischen Tatsachen bleiben (wobei auch ich kein "defektes" Gerät ausschließen kann, so hört sich das nach einer typischen Symptomatik für verschmutzte/korrodierte Kurzschließerkontakte an).
