One of the best books I have read in a long time
One of the best books I have read in a long time. Danielle Ofri gives a marvellous insight to what doctors go through in the toughest of professions that tests your inner strength to the point of breakdown. Doctors are often looked upon as clinical, detached and unemotional. The book sensitises you to the fact that doctors are also humans and they need your empathy too.

I read this book a few years ago, after "How Doctors Think," by Jerome Groopman. They present very complementary ideas. Ofri delves into how our emotions can affect how doctors view illness, and how they practice. She also discusses burnout in a frank and open way, calling into question how the profession deals with it, and the responsibility it has to create a welcome and supportive environment for learning and practice.

There are many books, there are many good books, ant this one of these good and emotional books When one (as a doctor) reads this book feels that Danielle not only knows well what doctors feel, but also how doctors feel. A must read for doctors

p210 In this book,I've focused mainly on emotions that are often called negative-fear, shame, grief, anger and being overwhelmed-because these are the ones that exert the strongest influence on medecal care. p211 But even positive emotions have the potential for negative influences.A classic examples is doctors who care friends or family members. The closeness and love can inhibit the doctor from asking awkward questions of doing uncomfortable procedures-asking about sexual history, performing a rectal exam, or questioing drug use, for example.
