Pattern Design (Dover Art Instruction) Review: a definite go-to book - I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is continually inspiring. And when I need to learn something new, it does not fail to teach. Yes, it was written over a 100 years ago, but pattern is pattern. There are only so many ways to cover a two-dimensional surface with motifs or lines, and instructions for so doing are excellent. I have had difficulty only with using them for making repeats of abstract paintings, a topic only arising a number of years after Mr. Day's classes ceased. I suspect that, had he encountered such, there would have been elegant instructions for accomplishing the task. I am so glad Dover is keeping this classic in print. Review: Pithy, practical, instructive illustrations - This book is quite old in terms of it's publishing dates, which makes me assume that it is a classic in the genre. I forget if I was referred to this book by a friend in textiles or if I found it myself. Regardless, it seems to cover the gamut of all repeat patterns and how to make them with visual instructions

LOVE this book
For anyone interested in the art of repeat patterns, this book is fantastic. Filled with lots of good old fashioned advice and methods, it shows a whole bunch of ways to build repeating blocks that you can then manipulate and decorate to your own ends. Techniques are easily adapted to use in a vector graphics program too, so you can follow instructions with a ruler and pencil or with your computer.

Not what I expected.
I was surprised that this book went into discovering the origins of particular patterns. The images are all in black & white and looked like my college text books. With a little color and sharp lines it would have been a lot better.

Great content on designing patterns, meh printing quality.
Fantastic content, really goes into the how and why of pattern design. Book printing and design is meh, but fine for the price.

A most excellent book on Print Textile Design. If you want to get a proper understanding on how textile print designs are constructed then this is the book for you.The English grammar used is Victorian but the knowledge is bang up to date for the digital world of creative design.

Great resource for anyone interested in the technical aspects of pattern design as it used to be done. I think these older resources are priceless for pattern designers who want to stand out from the crowd. I’m a nerd for books like this and I wasn’t disappointed.

Every surface designer should read this! I would recommend it to students playing with patterns and design in general. Old school but very inspiring!
