Does 9” refer to the threaded rod area or the height of the item entirely?

the threaded portion is 8 inches, the nut is about 2 inches, leaving about 6 inches of actual travel

I wish to use this to make a book press..does the base have screw holes in it to mount it to a base board. ?

I purchased the same press screw to make a book press. It does not have holes in it. I made a piece out of wood that went over the press foot and attached to my press board. It not only holds the press foot in place, but adds rigidity to your press board.

What is the max extension distance from base to base?

about 6 inches of travel, 8 inches thread, 2 inches nut
