Causes of poorer health in prior centuries is vividly explained by hazardous living conditions, especially for children. Improving living conditions during the twentieth century may explain much lower rates of severe illness among a large range of diseases. I'm particularly impressed by the polio story. The correlation between reduced agricultural spraying (eg lead based insecticides) and lower incidence of polio is uncanny ! The book is a goldmine for such information. Information which warrants much greater exposure. Although correlation doesn't equal causation, correlation from multiple possible causation requires serious investigation. The other strength of the book is in presenting public health data on mass vaccination so the reader can decide on its effectiveness in reducing severity of diseases. It turns out that mortality from measles, whooping cough and other diseases had already nearly bottomed before the vaccine rollout ! Fantastic work by the authors for the major research effort needed to trail-blaze this valuable perspective.

Every doctor, nurse, parent, teacher should read this book. And every journalist before they talk about the subject. A must have.
