FIRST ALERT BRK SC7010B-3 Hardwired Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector with Battery Backup, 3-Pack

Easy installation. I had switched from Kidde to BRK and First Alert detectors. I was seeing too many reviews where Kidde seems to have a bunch of their detectors are going bad around within a few months time. The Kidde detectors I had were good without any issues. They lasted over 10 years. On this BRK model I like that the green that glows is kind of buried into the detector so it's not being overly bright. I have to get closer to the detector before can I see the green light. I like that the replacing the batteries doesn't require the detector to be removed from the mounting plate. Also with the two tone alarm it is much louder than just a since tone. Just pull on it and the battery holder slides out. I used Wago wire connectors to connect the wires just in case if I ever need to switch brand of smoke detectors in the future.

There are competitors, but this is a very standard combo unit, especially for residential installation. When houses are not wired for smoke/CO2 detectors, people install battery powered units, but these units only have the batteries as backup for when the power goes off. Otherwise they run on AC power. This is more reliable, and the detectors are all connected, so when one is triggered they all let you know. There is discussion about the type of detector. In those discussions, this type of detector is sometimes preferred, especially for residential usage. I am describing a combo smoke/CO2 detector. CO2 detectors are now hardwired to expire. The expiration date is based on when you first pull the insullating tab that comes in it, and they last about eight to ten years. This is a safety feature and yes, they all have it. You will know you have reached that point when you hear the multi-beep warning. Two things to know: 1) If you reset it, it will give you about two days peace. If you pull it off the wall AND remove the battery, you will have peace without protection until you replace it. 2) If you have more than one in your house, you might as well replace them all at once. Generally there should be one outside the door to each bedroom, which in some houses is one unit, but in others more.

Almost a year ago now, I ripped out all of the smoke and CO detectors in my house. I replaced them all with hard-wired detectors during a home remodel in accordance with NFPA guidelines (e.g. one in every sleeping quarter, gathering area, outside the door of every sleeping area, bottom/top of every stair, etc). The hard part was crawling around in unfinished areas of the house to run wire everywhere: once I had 12/3 NM-B in every ceiling box, wiring up these detectors was quick and easy. Each detector has a base that screws onto the junction box. It is a plastic flange that covers a quarter inch or so around the box, helping to mask the edges of the paint job or any irregularities in the drywall cutting. The wire hardness snaps into the detector, which then twists onto the flange. It comes with a label where you can write the data of install for future reference. It looks great compared to your Home Depot special, where you are lucky to get more than two that are compatible with each other. So far I have had zero false alarms after 8+ months of being installed. They have done better than the old ones that nuisance tripped by frying bacon - and the new ones are installed close to the old ones. Hitting the test button, they all go off within a second or two and are LOUD. They could wake the dead, which is important because I may as well be dead when I am sleeping. A train could smash its way through the house and I would not wake up. These things are loud enough to make my ears hurt more than a rock concert. I have burned a few candles near them and they have not triggered, but have not tried with actual fires, e.g. burning a 2x4 close by. It seems like smoke detectors have gone downhill lately, but these seem to work well enough based on my own observation and on other reviews.

These units replaced older smoke only detectors in our bedrooms. Building code in many areas (including my own) now require smoke and carbon dioxide detectors. A few days after replacing I noticed a very dirty ceiling fan. The fan was cleaned REAL good! About 3 hours later all the detectors go off (they are linked)! I removed the bedroom detector and cleaned out, vacuumed etc.. reinstalled and no issues. A month later, I started dusting shelves in the spare, unused bedroom. I also shook the bedspread a bit. Less than an hour later the detectors go off! Same drill, removed and vacuumed. I left it down for a day or so. Reinstalled and no issues since. I like that these detectors use AA batteries in place of 9 volt. AA batteries are used more in my home than 9 volt. So I believe dust is one of the factors of a lot of false alarms. Just speculation.

Very good product. Installed and works great - very loud which is just what I was looking for. Just came through a house fire which started in the garage. This is great for the house but we are still looking for a fire alarm that can be installed in the garage and which has monitors for inside the house. Any ideas?

Delivered on time. Excellent quality. Easy to install. Might consider a bit pricey, but the life of my family is priceless! I feel good knowing that this product is installed.

We just moved into a newly built home that has the required hardwired smoke detectors throughout. Of course the builder just used a contractors pack of ionization alarms, including one just 10 ft from our kitchen. Two months in, and the alarm has gone off every time we open the oven. No visible smoke. Just heat and cooking vapours. That clearly wouldn’t do so we got this photoelectric alarm instead. It works great. No more false alarms from the oven. It clipped right in to the wiring from our BRK alarm, though I did have to loosen the two screws and switch the bracket. 5 minutes work. The fact that it is also a CO detector is just an added bonus. I only removed a star because I feel it could be priced better.
