So, it's more versatile, but it needs to plug into some device that implements the effect; it's just a controller.

can this make swells on the guitar?

The Yamaha FC7 Control Pedal can NOT be used directly inline with a guitar. However, the pedal may be compatible with some amplifiers/effects units if they have a "Controller" or "Expression" input.

Can I use this for guitar

YES you can use it for a guitar if you have the right multi effects pedal. I just bought a Zoom G3 and it works all the expression pedal effects not just the volume. I've used it with the Zoom G1, G1N and the A2 pedals and it always worked. Just plug it into the Control In input jack.
