Q: I do my painting sitting down in a chair. I am 5 ft 3 how low can the bottom of the painting be from the floor at the lowest ?

I’m 5’3” and I sit to paint. It’s perfect!

Q: Can this easel hold a canvas perfectly straight up and down?

Yes it will. The only real complaint I have is that adjusting the angles is not the easiest thing to do, as it involves unscrewing 6 different knobs. But it will adjust to almost any angle

Q: Does the storage area get in the way upright or flat?

I use the easel flat, right now. the storage area doesn't bother me. I'm doing 18x24 stuff.

It isn't difficult. The is a spring latch under the tray. Just pull it and adjust the height and then release it. Works fine.
