Squeeze Water Filter

Bought this for a family backpacking trip and love it. I didn't keep track, but likely filtered 30-40 liters for our 3 day trip, and it showed no signs of slowing down. I only have one 3 day trip with this filter, but so far it's easily the best filter I've had. I've used hand pump filters, chemical treatment, boiling water, other gravity filters, and this is by far the best. It filters fast even with just gravity. If needed the extra squeeze speeds things up (something my last gravity filter would not allow). Most of the time we just hung up my filter bag walked away and came back when it was done. When I got home I back flushed (also something my last gravity filter did not allow) and bleached per the instructions. It was easy and clearly had some affect as the backwash water was quite dirty. With respect to the filter I really have nothing bad to say about it. For $40 it's a great deal even without the accessories. If I had to be not picky, the only thing I could see making some improvement is some of the accessories. I didn't have any issues with the bags, but others have reported issues, and I've had issues with similar style flasks in the past. I ended up using a 3 liter flask from my previous Katadyne befree and let gravity filter water straight into my 3 liter MSR hydration bladder. This worked great! The fittings that came with it worked just ok. I like to have more hose, so again I stole some from one of my previous filters. I would have gotten by just fine with what was provided, but to get hands off filtering from one pouch to the next, I modified the setup a bit. Last, is a problem I have thats not unique to this filter. Trying to fill a pouch from questionable stagnant water is challenging, the water usually needs some kind of prefiltering (bandana), and needs to be scooped out. The is one of the few scenarios where a hand pump filter with a prefilter on the inlet hose wins out. Overall this is my favorite filter and expect it will be my primary filter from now on. If anything change my opinion I'll come back and update my review.

The only portable water filtration system my husband will use. This is an absolute God send when you're hiking or camping in the backwoods and need access to fresh drinking water. This isn't our first time with this product. My husband bought one for me to keep in my survival pack as well as a replacement for his original. Light, easy to pack and easy to use. It's everything you'd expect from a portable water filtration system. These have been around a long time and they are both dependable and reliable. It does an excellent job of filtering out the bad stuff from creeks, rivers and lakes. Excellent product.

Former military SERE, 1T071, used almost ever system, pump, reverse osmosis, and chemical treatment out there. The Sawyer mini and Squeeze are hands down the easiest and most effective system I've ever used. I carried a Sawyer Mini attached to a MRS 6 Liter Dromedary bag with a drinking hose for 6 years, back flushing after every trip. I use the Sawyer squeeze now.

I’ve been using the Sawyer Squeeze Water Filtration System for a while now, and it’s become one of my go-to filters for camping and hiking trips. It’s incredibly lightweight and compact, making it easy to toss into a backpack without taking up much space. The filtration itself is top-notch. It’s rated to filter out 99.99999% of bacteria and 99.9999% of protozoa, which gives me a lot of confidence when using it with water from streams, lakes, rivers, or even questionable rainwater. It’s reassuring to know I can get clean water without having to worry about harmful contaminants. The system is super easy to use, too. Just fill up one of the included pouches at your water source, screw the filter on, and either drink directly from the filter or squeeze the water into a bottle. The flow rate is pretty decent at 1.7 liters per minute, so I never feel like I’m waiting too long to get a drink. However, the biggest downside is the durability of the squeeze pouches. Out of the four I’ve used, two didn’t last more than five trips before they started to fail. While they worked great initially, I was disappointed to see them wear out so quickly. Luckily, the filter itself is excellent, so even when the pouches wear out, you can still use it with standard water bottles or set it up in a gravity system. Overall, I’d say this is one of the best water filters I’ve used, especially for the price. It’s perfect for outdoor adventures where you’re dealing with natural water sources, and it’s lightweight enough for backpacking. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is the durability of the pouches. If you’re okay with replacing them or using alternative containers, this system is a fantastic choice for clean, safe water on the go.

I replaced mine with sturdier bottles, and the filter works perfectly with standard 28mm threaded water bottles, which makes it even more convenient. And at just a few ounces, it’s easy to justify keeping one in every emergency or travel kit. Bottom line: A proven, field-tested filtration system that’s lightweight, easy to use, and dependable for both backcountry and emergency use. Keep a backup pouch or two, and this will serve you for years.

I recently completed a section hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, and I can’t recommend the Sawyer Products SP129 Squeeze Water Filtration System highly enough! This filter was a crucial part of my hydration setup, especially when used with my Cnoc bladder. Efficient Filtration: The Sawyer Squeeze filter provides excellent water filtration, removing 99.99999% of bacteria, 99.9999% of protozoa, and 100% of microplastics. It also effectively filters out cysts and sediment, giving me complete peace of mind while drinking from natural water sources along the trail. The filter worked quickly, allowing me to refill my bottles quickly. User-Friendly Design: The design of the Squeeze filter is incredibly user-friendly. It easily attaches to the Cnoc bladder’s 28mm opening, making the process of filtering water straightforward and hassle-free. The removable cap allows for direct drinking, so I could filter water straight into my mouth or a Smart Water bottle with the Sawyer Products SP150 Coupling. It also fits standard water bottles with 28mm threads, adding to its versatility. Lightweight and Compact: Weighing only 2 ounces and fitting in the palm of my hand, the Sawyer Squeeze is lightweight and compact, which is essential for long hikes. It fit perfectly in my pack without adding unnecessary weight, and it came with a reusable pouch that I could easily store when not in use. Durability: The Sawyer filter is built to last. This is by far the best water filter for hiking I know about. I tried a lot of filters including the new Sawyer Micro filter and some hand pump filters. This filter is superior on flow rate and even on maintenance compared to all the filters I tested and have seen in the field. You need to maintain this filter to maintain a good flow rate. This is done by back flushing the filter with clean water. Don't use the syringe to back flush because this will take forever and isn't really effective. The syringe is just 50 mL which is 20 times smaller in volume than using a water bag or bottle. I recommend using the Sawyer coupling device and a Evernew (0.9 liter) bag or a 1-Liter Smartwater bottle to back flush the filter. The threads on these bottles are compatible with the coupling device. The pressure you can obtain back flushing is much higher than the pressure you get using a syringe. Because of this higher pressure and larger water volume you'll dislodge more contaminants from the filter. I don't recommend relying on the Sawyer bags. They are light but they will break in the field after a lot of use. I recommend using the Evernew 0.9-Liter or 2-Liter bags instead of the Sawyer bags to force water through the filter. You'll get a higher pressure and faster flow rate using the smaller bag but you'll have to refill it more. The Evernew bags will last so much longer than the Sawyer bags. In my tests I saw a flow rate around 1.6 liters a minute using the Evernew bags which is faster than most pump type filters. What I like about using the Sawyer filter is the lack of moving parts. The only problem I have had in the field after thousands of miles is the Sawyer bag leaking. After replacing the Sawyer bag with the Evernew bag or Smartwater bottle (grocery store water bottle) I have not had any issues. If your Sawyer filter water filter flow rate slows even after back flushing consider soaking in vinegar (slightly acidic) to remove any mineral deposits (slightly basic) that have formed inside the filter. See Sawyer tutorial video. I did this and it brought my flow rate from 0.2 liters a minute back up to about 1.5 liters a minute. I should emphasize the slightly lighter Sawyer Micro filter isn't worth it. The extra weight of this Sawyer squeeze provide much better flow rates and is so much easier to maintain in the field.
