A great follow up to the Switch, for better or worse
The Switch 2 is a worthy follow up to the Switch 1 which makes no stunning changes, no massive improvements but no huge mistakes either. Do you need to buy one now? That depends - its fairly expensive, has few exclusives and is lacking 'that killer product' - y'know, a new Zelda, a Mario, a Fire Emblem or even a Golden Sun remake to absolutely dive in now - yet that will come in time (right Camelot?) The process of moving from Switch 1 to Switch 2 was thankfully very easy. Just put them next to each other, plug them both in and the process was complete in less then 30mins. Where the Switch 2 impresses is its build quality, its lovely new screen and its powerful performance. Lets address all of these pros now: + Build Quality. I previously used a Switch Lite but then moved to the Switch OLED. The Switch 2 is just...just better made. The Joycon magnetic fix is excellent and they remain very stable during gameplay - unlike the OLED where the joycons would 'wiggle'. The Joycons themselves are bigger and genuinely better. Mouse controllers are unique and interesting - maybe we will get more strategy games down the line? Its hard knowing how this will be integrated into games honestly, but could support some interesting developments. The kickstand is great, and even enables vertical play for appropriate games (unlike the OLED which could not be positioned vertically easily with its stand). + Screen Quality Geez, go on Reddit and its filled with howling about the screen quality but it seems great to me - and I came from the OLED Switch 1. Part of it is the huge size of the screen (even if not quite a match for my beloved PS Portal), but its bright, vivid and genuinely makes 'most' older Switch games look better (not always tho, see Xenoblade 1, 2 and 3 - graphics update when?) + Powerful Performance You can easily look up the figures, but the Switch 2 bursts with power, helping games (like Pokemon for example) run much faster, quicker and just better on Switch 2. Load times are almost always quicker. If they can get Cyberpunk running on the Switch 2 in a good state - then the future for the Switch 2 is very exciting. Also, shout out to playing Gamecube classics on it, love some Soul Calibur 2. What's not so good? Unfortunately there are certainly some things to draw out here: - Battery Life Yes, its poor - absolutely. Expect as little as 2hrs on modern Switch 2 games, more on Switch 1 games. Nintendo has absolutely done everything possible to squeeze excellent performance in a form fitting body. Would it have been better to make a bigger, heavier console for more battery life? I would say yes, but just make sure you travel with a little battery pack otherwise (which you can conveniently charge through one of the two USB C ports while continuing to game). + Joycon Delight Lets come back to those joycons, they really are good. Larger, more comfy and with a satisfying click. The mouse controls are great. The rumble is fine (although PS5 duelsense it is not) - To OLED or not? I love OLED screens, and this ain't it. As per my positives though, the LED screen is great - really good, but OLED it ain't. To be fair to Nintendo, with the battery, tech and price point, it was never going to be an OLED. Will there be a 'Switch 2 Pro' further down the line with an OLED screen and better battery? Oh absolutely, no doubts there - along with a Switch 2 Lite. If the OLED is a deal breaker, be patient. - Launch and games Mario Kart is great, lets give it credit. Outside of that though, there is little to recommend that you can't already play elsewhere - and cheaper. See Cyberpunk, Hitman, Street Fighter and so forth. Also that's to say nothing about the price! I've got my fingers crossed for some swift discounts but we shall see... - Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo Sometimes I think few companies hate gamers more then Nintendo. £80 games is madness and we can forever blame Nintendo for this, Mario Kart is great, but that £80 can only be justified as a hustle to get gamers to buy the Switch 2 bundle. Virtual cards, I don't 'hate' them (its more flexible then Steam) but they can't be annoying. Digital download cards for physical games suck, please don't buy these - avoid, avoid, avoid. Nintendo Welcome Tour not being included in the Switch 2 is just petty and dumb. Where is the option to personalise your Switch 2 menu - its just bland white or bland black, ugh. Also 256gb of memory really fills up fast requiring an expensive memory card (also hard to secure currently). Thats before the conspiracy theory that a Switch 2 OLED is on the backburner to get fans to double dip! Nintendo are just...frustrating sometimes, but then, so are most gaming companies. To conclude: Despite my negatives, I think the Switch 2 is worth it, its a great console and the future looks bright - although there is no huge rush to jump in. + BUY IT: = If you have a Switch original or Switch Lite = If you have a large Switch library and play portable more often then not = You are Team Nintendo and don't have access to a PS5/PC to play games like Cyberpunk, Hitman and so forth = You have kids who love family game time. Nothing does this better then a Switch and multiplayer splitscreen. = You view Zelda as the pinnacle of games and would love to dive in again with the upgrade editions (which are A+++) - WAIT FOR IT: = You want to be patient and wait for the Switch 2 OLED (at least 2 years) = You are happy to wait for better exclusives and larger memory cards (allow 6 months to a year) = You are a redditor involved in a boycott (allow 1 to 2 weeks)
