Love it
Simply gum has a simple mission - real gum, real ingredients. It's great. Real gum - As the legend goes, America learned about chewing gum when General Santa Ana was taken prisoner. He chewed chicle, a dried sap from a tree, to calm his nerves. Somehow, the trend took off. Simply Gum uses real chicle. You may know Chicle as the ingredient that gives Chiclets brand gum their name. Real ingredients - The ingredient list doesn't have any weird chemical names or trade secrets. The ingredients are always a chicle base with natural flavors such as spearmint and a little sugar. That's all. Really good - So far I've had the maple and coffee flavors. Coffee flavor really does taste like fresh coffee, although the maple flavor really tastes more like brown sugar to me. Both are delicious. Flavors last a good time. I define a lasting flavor as anything longer than about 30 seconds. This gum holds up fine. Past that point you're chewing it to work your jaw, so flavor doesn't really matter. Real chew - Chicle has a great bite, which is unrivaled by any modern formulation in my opinion. The only problem with chicle is that it can "stick" ever so slightly to the teeth, which means it can be a nightmare for anyone with certain dental appliances. Definitely try a pack before you buy in if you ever have problems with things sticking to your teeth. But for pure chewing pleasure, chicle rules. Real packaging. The gum comes in a printed cardboard box. That's all. No foil wrappers, no plastic strips. It's just recyclable cardboard. There are also wax papers included. These are less common for Americans so you should know they're a polite way to dispose of used gum so you don't have to touch it. It's a nice thing to include. The catch? Simply Gum is expensive. I think they're 100% worth it. I keep swallowing my gun so far, which I always do when I love the flavor of gum. I keep thinking it's candy and want to reach for another piece. What about sugar? Won't it rot your teeth? Some people complain about sugar in gum. This is only a problem if you (like me) are prone to swallowing deliciously flavored gum like candy. The point of chewing gum for dental health is three-fold. One, you work your jaw muscles to promote proper function. Two, you can dislodge food particles hiding between your teeth. Three, you scrub off some of the sugars and bacteria which can hide on teeth and turn into plaque. Chewing gum with natural sugar still does all of this. So long as you chew it about 30 seconds longer than the point when it loses its sugary flavor, you're not really leaving any residue. Your saliva breaks down the sugars, the gum massages any remnants off your teeth, and you swallow the evidence. Just chew your gum completely, and enjoy that lovely chicle bite.

Gum is just gum, right? Not necessarily so.
Being old, I don't get out much these days. Instead, I mostly pass the time by smoking large cigars. Sadly, this is frowned on in the office where I work (I know, right?? Political correctness gone mad!!), so I chew a lot of gum when I'm there, and the flavors at the local CVS get pretty tired the nth time round. So when I saw these, I thought I'd give them a chew. They are pretty different from regular gum. They look, slightly disconcertingly, like pet food pellets; and they come loose and unwrapped in the box. In place of the wrappers, you get a separate bunch of post-chew wrappers, for thoughtful disposal of the used gum. I guess it's as good a way of saving a little on the manufacturing costs as any. The flavor is much less intense than regular gum - I'm not saying if that's good or bad, but there it is. And the flavors themselves? All good. My favorite is the licorice and fennel, a nicely subtle and complex taste; followed by the ginger, which has a nice little bit of heat to it. The coffee and maple syrup flavors are both good, sweet and mild. As for the cinnamon and mint? Well, I have to say, I don't really get cinnamon, it's always reminded me too much of old folk's baking when I was a kid; but the gum tastes like it's been made with the real thing,so that's to the good if you like it. Mint? Well I like a bit of mint as much as the next guy - plucked fresh from the garden on boiled new potatoes or shoved in a glass of hot, sweet tea - but I do feel there's too much mint in my life already. (I blame the toothpaste manufacturers. Would it really hurt so much just to offer us just a couple of choices?) But again, the taste of real mint is there. However, as with any gum, the flavor only lasts a few minutes at most; and this is where Simply Gum actually pulls ahead of regular gum. Instead of being left with what feels like a lump of tasteless soft plastic in your mouth, you actually have a smooth, natural tasting gum remaining. It actually reminds me a lot of the gum we used to make for ourselves from wheat as kids, back in the day. And that's a nice little bonus.

Simple ingredients, good flavor, NO CORN (probably?)
I really enjoyed this product. Some of the flavors were not to my taste - but not because they were bad, they just weren't my own personal favorites. That said, my teen daughter LOVED the ones I didn't enjoy, like the coffee and ginger flavors. Here's the thing with this gum - I can't do corn in any way and most chewing gums have some sort of corn byproduct/derivative/whatever (Sorbitol, Xylitol, etc.) I prefer not to have artificial sweeteners, which, again, most gums these days have. I'm not a super stickler about putting stuff I can't pronounce in my mouth, but a gum with only 5 easily recognized ingredients, (*probably?) no corn products, and no artificial sweeteners really appealed to me. (*I say probably no corn products because while most vegetable glycerin is coconut, palm, soy, I haven't really researched this particular brand to know for certain that is the case with this product.) So here are the trade offs, and yes, there are a few: The gum is harder to chew than most of the chewing gum products out there - at first. After a bit, everything softens up and is just fine. This isn't a huge thing, but it definitely is a little off putting for the first 45 seconds of chewing or so. The flavor is pretty solid - not too strong, not so weak you can't tell what flavor you're chewing, but it does fade far more quickly than with "Natural and Artificial Flavors" type gum. This said, I am not an all day gum chewer - it's usually something I do after dinner to either freshen my breath or maybe settle my tummy, so it's not a huge thing. It loses flavor, I toss it, the end. Either or even both of these really only knocks a half star off, if that. So why only 4 stars? Anyone else in their 40's who was raised by their TV will remember the "Freedent's the one that takes the stick out of gum..." jingle. I never really understood what the big deal was, but then, I didn't have my first cavity until I was 41 years old, so, yeah, I never had any "dental work" for my gum to stick to - and guess what? This gum definitely sticks to dental work. I only have one filling, but I have to remember not to chew this gum on that side of my mouth too much or I do get weird strands where the gum sticks to the filling and stretches out back to the gum wad. It's not a huge issue with one filling, but I wonder, for someone who's had more extensive dental work, if this would just be a nightmare. So yeah, that knocks down the review stars a little more. It's not the end of the world, but it IS annoying and for someone else might be even worse. Overall, yes, I will continue to buy this product based on my own preferences and needs, and yes, I would recommend it for others who have similar needs/preferences.

It's not terrible, but it's not good enough to buy again.
I like black licorice and anise. The stronger, the better. And I like all variations of the flavor, from the sweeter candy types (Twizzlers, Good&Plenty, black jelly beans) to the aromatic (Sen-Sen, no longer available), and even the hard stuff (double salt European varieties). I even like to chew licorice root. I've been looking for a good licorice gum since Black Jack went off the market a few years back (I see it's back again). I've tried Simply Gum Fennel, here's my take: Pros- It has a good licorice flavor, albeit not very strong. I would classify it as the herbal/aromatic licorice type. Gives your mouth that fresh, clean feeling that only licorice can. That's really the only positive thing I can say about it. Cons- First, the texture of the gum is natural, in keeping with the overall product. If you are used to chewing standard gum brands (Extra, Orbit, Dentyne, etc) and like how it stays chewy, you won't like Simply Gum. It starts out grainy and rather sticky- to the point that it catches on your teeth, almost like a caramel or taffy. After chewing for a few minutes it becomes more uniform and stays together, but after about 15-20 mins it turns very thin, almost like a paste. If you're the occasional gum chewer that wants a quick piece of gum to freshen your palette after food/drinks/smoking, this probably won't be an issue for you. I am a long chewer, and tend to keep a piece for hours. Second, the flavor diminishes quickly. As mentioned before, it's not that strong to being with so this is not surprising. This gum seems more suited for the short interval gum chewer. Overall- It's gum, it tastes like licorice, but neither the texture or the flavor hold up for long. The pieces are rather small- it takes 2 of these pieces to equal 1 stick of regular chewing gum, in my estimation. And then when you consider the price, there's not an upside there, either. I get the natural ingredient aspect, and recognize that's what makes the gum what it is. But that's not a selling point for me. I gave it 3 stars, because it is what it says it is- I just don't particularly care for it. I'll definitely chew the rest of what I have, but I can't see myself buying it again.

Makes great gum bubbles!
This is my second time buything this gum. Its been 12 years or better since I have been able to chew gum due to the ingredients. As a celiac with a LOT of food sensitivities this gum is AMAZING! The taste is great and lasts for a couple of hours. I like the size of the gum pieces which are just the perfect size. 2 pieces are way to much. And you can blow bubbles with this gum! I LOVE THIS GUM!!! And will continue to buy it.

Interesting product, healthy and flavorful, but it has some shortcomings.
As others have said, this gum is different than the mainstream brands, so it takes some time to get used to it. The variety pack with six different flavors is a great idea, and I liked all but one of them (I didn't care for the Fennel). I also thought that the flavors held up as well as most of the popular brands (Wriggly's Orbit, etc.). Having said that, I think that the company needs to do a little more work on the product itself because it tends to break apart and stick to your teeth if you chew it for any length of time. For this reason, I am giving it 4 stars, not 5.

Different - in a good way!
This gum is different... And that a good thing! Yes, the texture is different. And yes, the flavor is different. But honestly it's not THAT different. I typically chew for 45 minutes to an hour. Yes, the flavor fades after a few minutes but it lasts way longer than Fruit Stripe gum! I've noticed that the gum starts a little lumpy then gets a little loose before tightening up again. If it's loose - keep chewing! I love in included tissues for disposal! So far all the flavors I have tried have been great and natural. No overly sweet, sugar filled taste - just natural flavors. If you are looking for a replacement to bright pink bubble gum, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a healthier option for chewing gum, this is the place to start.
