26tb, new drive, works great for me
26tb Expansion drive, Dec2025, purchased for $309. Transfer speeds holds steady at 100-220mb/s over usb3, which is about as fast as the internal spin drives could push data. The case is a little thin and flimsy feeling compared to historical analogs, but there's plenty of vent holes, it doesn't matter at all to me that it's a bit thinner. It's plenty strong. I liked that it was formatted in advance, it plugs into my windows machines and Linux mint and Ubuntu machines seamlessly when unencrypted. Diag tool says it was a brand new drive, not a refurb.

Wont regret this!!
Love this, easy to use and a metric ton of memory, i put everything I had on it and still have lots of room for more!

It's really just an Exos drive
I shucked the external chassis to get a cheap 26TB bare drive. It's a Seagate Exos something or other on the inside. So far as I can tell, it has similar characteristics to other 20TB+ Exos drives I own; a little louder than I'd like, capable of sustaining roughly 220MB/sec file transfers and big enough to be a meaningful upgrade for my 5 year old 16TB drives. I'm not worried about losing the warranty but I do think Seagate should warranty the drive by itself rather than the drive specifically in the enclosure.

Great drive IF you ditch the case.
This is a lightning fast drive IF you chuck the case and attach it directly to your PC's motherboard with a SATA cable. In my opinion, that's the only practical option. You can keep the USB board and a cable handy, just in case you need to bring the drive to another place and transfer files. Cases trap heat which throttles transfer speeds down and shortens drive life too, so do yourself a favor and strip it (once you're confident it's not faulty, and you're pretty sure you won't have to return it).

VERY noisy, VERY hot running.
VERY noisy, I hear it running 2 rooms away, VERY hot running, 59c compared to internal 36c. Think I shouldn't have bought this for wife's backup unit. Sure hope it lasts to at least end of warranty, but VERY doubtful!!!!

Gets too hot
26tb version is good, drive is new, however according to the smart data even in idle being connected to the computer it gets past 135 within 30 minutes so the enclosure isn't great. That's at 72 degrees room temperature. I struggle to understand if my housing is faulty or if this is intended for obvious reasons.

Slow drive and much smaller capacity
Very slow rate of transfer. Also it "fills up" at less than 20 TB despite being rated as 26 TB. DO NOT recommend this.

If you’re looking for a massive parity or data drive for an Unraid setup, the 26TB Seagate Expansion is proving to be a top-tier candidate. While most people buy these for plug-and-play desktop storage, the real value is inside the plastic shell. The Shucking Experience Shucking this unit is surprisingly painless. The clips are straightforward, and the drive slides out without much of a fight. Once removed, the internal drive identifies perfectly in Linux and Unraid without any proprietary "white label" firmware headaches that sometimes plague other brands. Reliability and Thermal Performance Before adding it to the array, a rigorous "burn-in" is essential. This unit passed a full SMART long test and a multi-hour Unraid preclear with zero errors or reallocated sectors. One of the biggest surprises is the thermal performance. Even during the intensive parity build, it stayed remarkably cool. In a compact case like the Jonsbo N3, heat is usually an enemy, but this drive stayed cooler than neighboring WD units. Having an empty slot on either side certainly helps, but the drive itself seems to have better thermal efficiency than expected for such high density. Noise Floor Large capacity drives (18TB+) are notorious for "thumping" or seeking loudly. However, this 26TB model is impressively quiet. In a NAS-style chassis, it doesn’t produce that aggressive mechanical chatter, making it a great choice for home servers that live in shared living spaces. The Verdict For Unraid users, this is a "set it and forget it" parity solution. You get massive density, easy extraction, and a drive that doesn't sound like a coffee grinder. Plus, having the Rescue Data Recovery Services included provides a nice safety net if you decide to keep it in the original enclosure for a while first. Pros: Massive Density: 26TB is a perfect "future-proof" parity size. Cool & Quiet: Outperforms WD equivalents in noise and temps. Easy Shuck: No specialized tools or heavy prying required. Clean Preclear: Rock-solid stability out of the box. Cons: Price: It’s a heavy investment, though usually cheaper per TB than bare enterprise drives.

Works great and is very easy to set up. Quite noisy and you can feel the ticks within my desk. You have to use the enclosed PSU (not a generic 12v HDD PSU) because it uses a lot more power than other HDD's, but of course, 26TB means you can give away all those old units! The PSU comes with a variety of pin adaptors for every plug on the planet, including EU, UK, Oz and US. I have purchased this purely to backup my main file server and store it off site. To initially copy 21TB took about 30 hours and once initially copied, the weekly update takes about 15 mins, so quite nifty and perfect for my application. I personally, would not use this as a permanently connected drive, its a bit too big, noisy and clunky (and of course 26TB is way beyond a USB connection!), a built in drive is better for speed, power, ventilation, vibration proofing etc. and this drive is probably the ultimate for being able to transport that data in a safe secure manner. You will need something with lots of memory to connect to it because chances are that 26TB of data will probably be over a million files! Make sure windows is set to 'Not indexed' and your anti virus scanner is configured to 'not check' when connected because something this large in capacity takes hours not minutes (and my PC is 5.6 Ghz, 32G RAM so no slouch!)
