Marshall returns to its roots without costing a fortune.
What if a VoxAC30 and Marshall JVM45 (I played a JVM45 and this is pretty darn close) had a baby? You'd probably get the Origin series of amps. After trying the 50 watt combo I decided to get the 20 watt head and cabinet instead and what a great decision that was. The 50 is definitely the best choice for a gigging musician (though 20 would be ore than enough) but I found the 20 with it's power options to be the best bet. Having played the Studio series and Jubilee I truly feel dollar for dollar this is the best amp on the market. It fills that hole in Marshall's lineup for clean/vintage/pedal friendly amps under $1000 that Fender and Vox and more recently Blackstar) have been fighting over and with the recent $100 price drop it's almost a no brainer. I've played Voxs and Fenders and though they will give you that more recognizable sound (clean) I feel they don't give you that umph this amp gives you. It is single channel so this amp is really for people that play clean and like that vintage distortion and keep things simple (sounds amazing with hollow and semi). BUT if you are a pedal junkie this is by far the best amp IMO. And what a time to be alive if you do love pedals! Run it clean with little EQ and such and boy will your pedals shine. Even allowing those pedals that let you intensify with your guitar's volume shine and don't get muddy. And it does it while being a true tube amp. People will say its single channel is limiting but not if you use pedals. It is made in Vietnam and is PC board not hand wired but I've run it daily for an hour or two since January without a single issue. I use the 2 watt setting with a 2x12 vertical cabinet (the 20 watt combo with a 10 inch speaker is way too lacking in bottom end) and it just hits that sweet spot without neighbor complaints. Some people find the 5db boost useless, I like using it for clean soloing on blues but the effects loop switch is really great. The only con which I felt was a con until I used it, so I will address is here, is the lack of reverb. But most amps these days use digital reverb and it's one kind. As mentioned before we are in a golden age of pedals and investing in a reverb pedal and running it through the effects loop gives you a much better reverb than most built in reverbs anyway. I use a EHX Oceans 11 and it's fantastic. You're gonna want some sort of delay anyway and a few pedal companies make reverb/delay combos too. So in closing I can't recommend this head enough. If you can't find them (seem to be sold out everywhere, especially the cabinets) the 50 watt combo is great too just keep it turned down low and the 5 watt setting and you will be fine, but I recommend the 20 watt head with a cabinet the most.

Awesome amp. Very vintage sounding
Awesome amp. Very vintage sounding, THE Plexi tone at your disposal. It's also available at an awesome price. Power reduction works pretty well, the tone is there at all level but I think the mid level gives you the best tone at the right volume! If you know how to properly dial in a Plexi type of amp and are aware of what gain/tone this amp is capable to do, this is the amp you need to get. If you want a very gainy amp, this is not for you.

Marshall Origin 20 head
The Origin 20 watt head will get you into classic Marshall tone at an affordable price. It can be used with a variety of cabinet combinations. The Origin 20 also works well with pedals. The Marshall Origin 20 is a great amp.

Got a bad one
So huge fast forward to Oct. of 2023. This 2nd amp has been good. I changed the tubes to JJ's and got rid of the microphonic tube noise that the factory tubes had. The people that work on my amps replaced a resistor that was known to fail and re-biased the amp slightly cooler then it comes with. So over all this 2nd amp has been a good experience. This is not a high gain amp, it is also not a Plexi like some say it is. This is its own flavor that some will like and others will hate so your milage may very. So that being said its still a great pedal platform amp thats not going to break the bank. Well that lasted from Feb. 18, 2020 to April 22, 2020. Less then 20hrs of use and what I though was a bad power tube turns out to be a bad output transformer. Oh and March 20 was the return by date.... So had to be fair... Amazon has decided to send me a replacement amp since this went bad in 2 months. But on a side note it actually sounded good..... Takes pedals really well. Recommend keeping the back panel off to help with cooling. Have a feeling that may have been part of my issue. Guess I will have to see if this one will last more then 2 months. Until then staying at a 1 star due to the first one crapping out so fast.

Great value for the money
Probably won’t find better value for the money elsewhere. It’s a great sounding amp but keep in mind there isn’t much gain available and to get the amp to break up you need to turn it up most of the way which is still really loud even on the lowest power setting. Because of this it will likely work best as a pedal platform for most people. Also, I would recommend getting the head version and running it through a quality cab for the best tone. My only issue so far was that the input jack went bad after only a few weeks and I had to order a replacement and swap it out so it looks like there are some issues with QC. If this didn’t happen I would have given it 5 stars.

First of all I must declare Im a fender guy, and the thought of getting away from a road case containing my 76 twin reverb was welcome news to my back, but my ears questioned my decision. I have been seeking a good alternative to the weighty twin for years, emulation just wont do, and every other option just seemed lack luster. there are things about the Marshall I love and things that could make it perfect replacement for my sound preference. First of all its 20 watts. more than enough to get that horse power driven bottom end that a tube amp provides, not enough to fill an arena, sound engineers will love that fact, plus the DI makes stage setup a breeze. I've mated mine to an Orange 4/10 with vintage 30s or a 4/12 with greenbacks. Gauge your room each seem to perform better in different environments. What Id like to see is a variable DI output control and reverb on board with an XLR as opposed to the 1/4 DI output. Its lite weight, sounds good, easy to find your tone and Im happy to compromise the ideal sound it took years to find for this convenience, plus it takes pedals well. equipment reference, comes from a personal arsenal of amps.
