You get what you pay for
It's nice for the price, it's very light weight, and not the most durable. But it's what you'd expect paying that price. Perfect for a child who loves to draw in bed, or out and about.

Great for the price and it's intended purpose!
I love it, it is a little on the slim side but still holds everything I need for plein air drawing watercolor and pencils. The wood does seem thin, but that is what keeps it so light weight,. I personally am thinking about a polyurethane coating to make it a bit more durable. Hinges seem sturdy enough, and I do love the shoulder strap.

better quality than some reviews imply.
I was hesitant to buy because of the reviews saying it was poor quality but I'm glad I took a chance. I mean, it's $20 so don't expect a handmade exotic wood piece but with realistic expectations, you won't be disappointed. I've had absolutely no issues with it. I did add a clear varnish to make it smoother and a bit more durable but you could keep it as-is.

Can be for Plein Air or Writers on the go!
Most likely I would use this for Plein Air outings. It's compact compared to my other set up and want to try this out for painting outdoors. In my video, I show just an idea or two on how things can fit in this box. I tried my travel brushes in the faux leather case, but then it didn't leave room for my small wooden paint palette, unless I leave the watercolor journal home and just go with the loose watercolor paper. So it's versatile. You can make it work with a few adjustments. For example, the box would not close with a collapsible cup that is fairly large, but if you had the two small cups with lids, most likely it would close, OR just take some watercolor water brushes. I showed one in the box along with a micron pen, Japanese brush marker, pencil for sketching, and a fountain pen, needed eraser, and some washi tape. There was still some room for two more pens, pencils or markers. For a writer, this box has amble room for everything you would need for an outing -writing day! It fit a fairly thick journal. It has a wooden piece to hold the box open so you can use the lid for placing your journal for writing. The area inside the box for holding pencils, etc has a nice soft fabric backing to protect your pens etc. It has a 1 -1/4 inch wide strap to carry your writing box around your neck-shoulder. The latch is easy to maneuver open and closed. I was doing this with one hand as I was filming with the other hand. The wood may be on the softer side, only because it is fairly light weight, which is a good thing too, but don't think it would be a problem if you take care of it. I like it and look forward to going out to do some painting with this box.

Not sturdy, but cute
Very light in weight, needs gentle carrying. Not good for a rough hike into the woods, but perfect for taking to a park.

just a box… nothing special
This is just a basic wood box with no special finishings or anything. It is merely stained whatever color and a webbing is added for shoulder carry. A few clips, elastics, etc are added inside. It’s not a standard sheet size so you can’t put regular papers in it. I would recommend a little tweaking to make it nicer. The way it is, it looks like you’re walking around with a wooden box on a webbing

Meh.
Change stars. After having used for a week or so, it started falling apart. Easy fixable if your a crafty person but still kinda aggravated.

Wooden Messenger Box: If it did not smell like fish I would give it a better review
First: It smells awful inside. Whatever glue they used to attach the lining to the inside lid of the box smells like fish. I am hoping that it will air out, but we shall see. It may get a hefty spritz of Febreze if it doesn't. Wish me luck. Second: As others have said, not the highest quality wood, the hardware is not the finest, but for the price not all that bad. I had to tighten the screws on the catch so it would close more smoothly. There is no sheen whatsoever to the wood, just stain, so I will probably cover it in a beeswax based finish to give it a little more shine and water resistance/durability as I intent to use it as a small watercolor pochade box.
