Is top smooth or can polyurethane be brushed on?

The top has a smooth finish, more like a playing surface, so the need for a poly coating is probably not necessary.

Can I purchase just the flocking tray alone? Or does anyone know where I can find one?

You cant order it separately. It is built in the case

Are the checkers pieces ridged and stackable?

Its a very nice set. I don't know what you mean by stackable. The are separately carved pieces. They do not stack on top of one another. The checkers will stack though.
