I recently added this sponge media to the top filter of my 4ft aquarium. The sponge is the perfect size and fits well in the filter media compartment. I placed a coarse sponge on top to prevent clogging, and it effectively traps fine particles and debris, keeping the water clear. Although I haven't cleaned it yet, I'm not sure about the ease of maintenance. I also used API ACCU Clear yesterday in combination with this sponge, and the results are impressive—the water is crystal clear, as you can see from the side view photo.

It's basically two layers ‐ foam and fibre. Activated carbon layer seems to be black net only and it, along with white mesh at the top and bottom seems to hold the structure together rather than providing any biological/mechanical filtration. So the total layers come to be 6. It works well and is durable. I've been using it for about 3 months with once a week cleaning and it's still usable. But, without any activated carbon, its price could have been lower.
