Stupid question - I have a '04 Buick Ranier - are BOTH pieces used or just the one clear piece? If both need to be used how does that work?

One piece is to connect the cable on the shifter end while the other piece is to connect the cable to the arm under the car. You usually just need one of them depending on which end of the cable needs to be reattached unless you were really unlucky and both ends came loose.
