White Plastic Toilet Seat Hinge Replacement with Bolts Screw and Nuts

So the plastic hinge of your toilet seat broke after 20 years. What to do? Wife: "new toilet seat. Duh." Me: "Just new hinge - easy to install - then we're not dumping more trash into the landfill, AND it's 1/2 the cost." Yep. 1/2 the cost. For $20 - I can get a new seat with new hinges and that smooth (wonderful?) "nobody's ever sat here before" sensation (at least once). Yeh. $20. I'd probably go this way next time. Challenges: a) Screws - cheap, and I'm not sure what size they are, but a small PH bit was too small and a bigger one was too big. Two of the four screws were stripped by the time I got them 3/4 installed. So I had to use a hack saw to cut them and vice grips to remove them (heads removed), and then I epoxied the holes they left - and used my own screws. Time invested so far: 45 minutes (44 minutes too many). b) Instructions. Sparse. My old hinge was broken and gone - so I couldn't model the new install. Took me a few minutes to figure out what went where. c) Unlike others, I had no trouble with the bolts. Snug and easy to install. A large flathead screwdriver worked for the last 1/2 turn.

I first bought an "Everbuilt 1000055085" toilet seat hinge replacement kit from Home Depot. It absolutely did not match even though they sell Kohler toilets and sold me my Kohler toilet seat. That was their only repair kit they sell (a defective kit that does not fit the seat they sold!). It did not fit and also had very bad reviews from the store customers. I didn't have to redrill any of the eight screw holes for attaching this replacement hinge. Those too were an almost exact match. This almost exact match was twice as much as the dysfunctional unit but it will WORK! Finally, I have a toilet seat that again aligns with the underlying bowl of the toilet. Note that I have used these twice and the first was exact and the second (another seat bought at the same time) was just a bit off but still worked). I returned the original part and got my money back since they sell a defective part that most folks seriously complain about. It is not a lot of money but they should not be selling a defective part and not selling something like this that exactly matches the toilet seat they sold to me. I appreciate that Amazon pays attention to such details and likely scrubs sellers from selling defective products like this Everbuilt 1000055085 unit that likely should be pulled off the shelf and thrown away. This basic unit works okay and is almost an exact match! I may decide to modify it a tiny bit because it does not exactly fit perfectly on the second (should have been identical) toilet seat which was bought at the same time as the first toilet seat where this kit fit perfectly. So today I finally used the second (backup) hinge kit when the original Kohler hinges gave way on the other (of two) toilet seats I bought at the same time. I will be buying another one of these kits to have on hand should one of these every give up the ghost.

These hinges, while not identical to (the design may have changed over the years; our hinges were open ended on the outsides, but otherwise literally identical in configuration and placement) to the original hinges found in our Raritan PHII marine toilet seat by Bemis, they were a direct replacement. Thus it was a matter of removing the old hinges and installing the new ones, over the same holes in the seat and lid, with the exactly right spacing. In ours, having been installed for some years in a marine environment, the screws securing the seat hinge were sufficiently rusted that I had to break the remaining portion of the hinge in order to grab the screw head, instantly having stripped when I'd attempted a screwdriver, with a pliers and turn it out that way. The lid's screws were not so degraded, so they came out without a fight. In all cases, however, the provided screws were slightly larger than the originals, and the molded receiver holes in the hinges were the TINIEST bit closer together than the original. So, in prep for installation, I first used the plastic end of my screwdriver to flatten the slight bulge in the wood where the original screws had pulled up the surface when tightened. Inserting the new screws carefully (turning them backwards, gently, allowing me to feel the 'clunk' as the thread matched up, and starting from there), they bit firmly, but not so much that it was difficult to install them. The slight difference in on-center distance did not prove troublesome in the end, as the molded holes under the receiver (the part into which the head of the screw would go) were large enough to take up that slack, and all the screws fit firmly and seated without any drama. Great. New hinges. No drilling! Let's install this seat! Well, given that even marine toilets have a relatively large hole into which to thread a provided nylon or similar bolt, the provided bolts easily slid through to the bottom. That's where it got interesting, and the reason for this being only 4 stars. The nylon bolts were only what I'd expected in that they were not metal. The pitch and diameter of the bolts was the same as the previous set. But the heads and the nuts were not. The provided seat bolts were a sad attempt at a match, given the near-identical nature of the rest of the package. I installed them, none the less, but the available engagement on the head, a ~1/4" cross-shaped pair of slots (NOT a Phillips head) was so small that while I could get a substantial flat-head screwdriver into the slots, they were not stout enough to provide the needed torque to make the seat stable on the stool. Worse, like most toilets, the underside of the stool's receiver is conical in shape. The provided nuts had a small raised circle - VERY short rise - presumed to center the nut. Nope, no way, no how, at least on my toilet. Combine that with the fact that, in the course of trying to get the seat stabilized, the bolt head crosses were now mangled and becoming useless. Even holding the bolt (no turning effort from the top) and attempting hand tightening (I have big hands and hand strength, so put a fair amount of tension on the bolt in the process) would not allow the seat to stabilize. Fortunately, I was careful in the removal of the old set of seat bolts. Those had a proper wide head (the better to engage more surface in your tool on the bolt head) which, even better, had a 1/2" hex nut cast into it, and a conical nut. I soon had the seat absolutely stable: I could not move it, to the degree that I feared for the new hinges if I pressed the matter. In practical use, it has proven stable. So, to summarize: Awesome direct replacement for my Bemis Marine Toilet seat. 5 stars Nice new, slightly larger, Stainless Steel screws to attach hinges to seat and lid. 5 stars Great value for money - mostly in that, from another reviewer, I knew they'd match. 5 stars Durability - based on our usage of the seat in question, when they were installed before we bought the boat 15 years ago - excellent, despite their relatively small size. However, they did break, under mere normal use. Therefore, only 3 Stars HORRIBLE seat bolts. Nearly worthless. If there was a turd-pile selection instead of stars, it would get them. As there is no modus for those, nor zero stars, 1 star. Note that this is the sole 'real' complaint that I have. I would recommend securing a set of seat bolts with a single large slot (such that you could use a US quarter dollar piece on the top) and/or a hex head, and 45 degree conical nuts, if you ever intend sitting or twisting on the seat held by this set of hinges. Otherwise, two things will happen. Inevitably, the seat will shift, which is a bit disconcerting. And, eventually, you'll sufficiently stress the hinges that one of them will break. We live on a boat, and are out of the US when this occurred. A guest brought the replacements I'd sent to her home, with her. That meant that, though I had replacement hinges, I would not have easy access to other seat bolts. Fortunately, the ones I removed from the prior hinges worked. Had that not been the case, being a belt-and-suspenders kind of guy, I also had a set of toilet seat bolts in my plumbing bin. But you may not. Be prepared to either have a true set on hand, or to have to go fetch. Of course, Amazon has the right stuff, if you wanted to combine orders. Their Comfort Seats C200Hex Plastic Replacement Bolts and Nuts for Top Mounts, White have the requisite means of secure tightening: a hex head top, and a full conical bottom nut. This plastic is very cheap and I don’t expect it to last but a couple months.

These were a perfect fit after we broke a hinge and the toilet seat was falling off. Not too difficult to replace, so it now looks like new

Perfect replacement for our very old Bemus toilet seat. The mounting holes for the brackets are 22mm apart, center of hole to center of hole. Note that some models are 18mm and other - and unfortuantely most do not even provide this specification. The included new screws are great as the old, while still functional, were rusty. Exactly the same length and a new, perfect snug fit. For the price a great, easy repair.
