Far Cry in Big Sky Country
Far Cry 5 takes the series to the states in the big sky country of Montana. Where a cult has taken over the fictional Hope County and establish their own theocratic state with a cult leader, the man bun cult of personality Joseph Seed and his siblings. You play as a sheriff's deputy who in a series first is completely customizable. Task with arresting Joseph and shutting down the cult. In typical Far Cry fashion everything went wrong and now you are stuck in the county and must lead a local resistance to free the county and take out Joseph Seed. Far Cry 5 manages to be better than the recent entries in the series and is close to rivaling Far Cry 3. How? Let find out. Pros: The Graphics: I’ve said many times before in this generation but it keeps being true. Far Cry 5’s graphics are one of the best looking games in the market especially running this on 4K with a Pro. Rural Montana is the last place I expect the series to take place but Ubisoft really hit it out of the park with the graphics of the game looking down right photorealistic at times. All while having a locked 30 frames with hardly any drops even in the most hectic of scenes where explosions are going off everywhere and it’s none stop chaos. We come a Far Cry from the third game with unstable frames in the past generation of consoles. Ubisoft should be commend for pushing the envelope. Gameplay: Simply fun and enjoyable to blast around Montana taking down cultists called peggies. Gunplay is tight and responsive. The myriad of choice returns how to play guns blazing, stealth, and even with air support now. Just cathartic fun. A somewhat new addition is the ability to recruit npcs and bring them with you along the fight. I would I appreciate it more if most of them didn’t suck. AI is piss poor and pretty much one or two are only useful to you like Jess the huntress. Alternatively you can play Co-Op and take down missions. It works the same as Far Cry 4 and that you only progress on the host’s world. The open world has been refinited where you don’t open up and see a bunch of icons and you have to actually explore the world to find stuff. Gone are the towers you have to climb to defog the map now actual exploring is required. It’s still the same Ubisoft Open World style but it has been refined to better and these changes show I had more fun in this open world than other ubisoft games. Music: The ost is one of the best in the franchise with country and religious themes all mixed in to make a fitting soundtrack. Also sound is great and voice acting is serviceable. Not Political: What might a disappointment to some or a relief to others is the lack of political commentary in Far Cry 5 plot. At first glance the plot might be some commentary about Middle America as the story is about some religious zealots who uses a well armed militia to enslave a town. At the end it doesn’t make any commentary or critiques about middle america or even religion for that matter. It can be a disappointment to some who want to see some over all message. But for me and others who don’t want games to be politicalization it was nice to see that Far Cry 5 wasn’t some modern day political commentary about rural America. At the end of the day Far Cry 5 is anticult and that’s about it. So for those who are Pro Cult Far Cry 5 is not your game. Far Cry Arcade: A content creator that has massive potential for those who master it and put content regularly. At the time of this review it’s still barebones as the game has been out for a week only but in a couple months I can see great things coming from the content creator. If Far Cry 5 plays its cards right they can have an unless stream of content released for free by the community. Arcade a nice edition that adds more value to the game. Cons: Far Cry does so much right however it does stumble along the way with some bizzare choices. Silent Protagonist: The silent protagonist returns something that has not been done since Far Cry 2 and it's just bad. In the game you have these face to face cutscenes and your character is just an annoying mute. Silent Protagonist can be a good thing if implement right and Far Cry 5 doesn’t implement it right. You have all these characters talking to you and about you. No lines of dialogue to respond with either to justify the choice of a silent protagonist. I know the deputy can be male or female but your telling me a billion dollar company like ubisoft couldn’t hire two voice actors one male and one female to do the voice for the protagonist. A step back from the past three Far Cry games which had a talking protagonist. Story: Another weak point in Far Cry 5 is the story side missions can be fun and goofy. But the main story is mediocre at best. The cult are your clear cut bad guys. The Seeds try to seem sympathetic to you with the stories of their past having tragedy but it doesn’t really work with giving them character. The basic gist of the cult is their doomsday preppers and the end is near and they want to build the society after the fall of civilization. They also kill or kidnap people against them and at the end it just a generic evil organization with no real depth. Joseph Seed is no Vaas, no Pagan Min. He a step back from the evil but likeable villains of past Far Cry games and that’s a shame you see some potential but it poorly written. A majority of the characters are also forgettable which is disappointing as Far Cry is known for its colorful characters. Microtransactions: Useless and glorified cheat codes that you pay money for. Tolerable? Yes. No Battlefront 2 here but still should not be in the game it already has a $30 Season Pass how much more monetization does the game need? Still completely ignorable but should not be in the game as stated before there justed cheat codes and cosmetics that you pay for. That you can unlock by playing the game. So please don’t buy the microtransactions. Melee Combat: The thing that made me hate Far Cry Primal returns in all it’s floating glory. While shooting is nice melee is not. It feels floaty and unresponsive. Lucky you can ignore it mostly unlike Primal’s limiting weapons. Conclusion: Far Cry 5 is not a reinvention of the series it’s still the same formula but refined to make it better than it was before. The return back to gunplay from the spears, clubs, and axes from Far Cry Primal is just what the franchise needed. The setting of Montana although unexpected was a welcoming surprise and end up stealing the show along with it soundtrack. 2018 is shaping up to be a great year in gaming compared to the disappointment that was last year. Between Dragon Ball Z Fighters and the sleeper hit Kingdom Come Deliverance. Now Far Cry 5 easily one of my top 5 games of the year so far. I absolutely recommend Far Cry 5 it’s glorious cathartic fun.

I Didn't like Far Cry 2, 3, 4 or Primal. Far Cry 5? AWESOME. Gameplay is flat out fun and doesn't get old.
To start off, I'm not writing a review to sell the game. Just giving my thoughts on what I really love about Far Cry 5. I'm a 41 year old dad of 2 boys that's been playing since I was 6 (original mario, duck hunt, atari, amiga, texas instruments, etc) Feel like I've seen alot of games and played alot of games. Although, I'm a casual gamer. I've had to become one mainly because I have a family, job and just don't have the time to invest in games anymore I don't get into stories in games. I purely play games for gameplay. ONLY gameplay. I could careless if 'Brenda' marries 'Steve' and has 'little Timmy' sacrificed to the sun Gods in order to save humanity. I could careless and think games have tipped WAY to far to that side of the fence that gameplay in the past 15 years has been watered down. I just want games that I can jump into and have a blast playing. Saying that, I've never been a big fan of Far Cry 2, 3, 4 or Primal. To me the Far Cry series kept getting further and further away from what made Far Cry so great from the original 'Far Cry 1'. Far Cry 1 was all about gameplay. I've played Far Cry 2, 3 & 4 and skipped Primal. I maxed out 2, quit 3 half way through and quit 4 half way through. SO I was hesitate to get Far Cry 5. Figured it's more of the same or worse. BUT something about Far Cry 5 really tugged at me. Maybe it's because it's based in the good ol' USA, feels like home and feels real. MAN, am I glad I pulled the trigger and bought this game. I've been gaming for 35 years and have played alot of open world shooters. It's been awhile since I've had this much fun playing a game for a few hours on end. My son watched me play last night and we laughed so hard at some of the things you can conjure up in this game. Just flat out fun gameplay. I'm just flat out excited to have a game that feels so much fun to play and it wants you to play it that way. Just have fun and go at your own pace. There is something about this game that absolutely reminds me of Far Cry 1 the original. It honestly feels like it went back to it's roots in alot of ways. I don't hear alot of people comparing it to Far Cry 1 but I'm pretty sure it's because they never played it OR the majority of the people reviewing this game are to young to even know a Far Cry 1 exists. Anyone that complains about this game is probably purely focused on story or anything other than the actual gameplay itself. Which just boggles my mind over the past 15 years... It's about gameplay right? Why story? Frickin watch a movie or tv show. I want a game for gameplay and Far Cry 5 gave me that. Havin' a blast and hope you do to! See you in the Arcade... That's where the real crazy good times are going to blow up!

Excellent game
This is refreshing to have such a good game that doesn't require online access. So far we find no fault with it, technically or artistically. Certainly one of the best gaming experiences ever. It builds further mechanics that were very good in Far Cry 4, and leaves behind some that were irritating. The story is excellent, and many games lose it there. This one delivers. I always like earlier Far Cry games, prior to 4, but they've upped their game significantly in these two with 5 being the pinnacle. I have to say that one thing that makes this standout so much in the console gaming world, is that it's not tied to an internet connection and a continuous feel of trying to sell you something, which I think destroys immersion (along with having to game with strangers on the net). In this game, it's you and the story, and you are part of it. Weapons are excellent along with the variety of vehicle types. I'm not much on flying games, but the flying portion is straightforward. It also shares something I liked about CoD, none of the bosses are magical, it's realistic in that. It can be played like Fallout or Just Cause. Update: Replay is probably better than Fallout. We have kept this game going over and over, figuring out new ways to defeat the bosses while still playing all the content. The hardest difficulty is pretty easy if you play through a few times and build your money and weapons. Experienced gamers probably can handle the hard mode first play through. Warning, all those folks out there who don't get the story, drive sometimes and listen to the radio station. The story is clear and well done, but you do have to listen to the news broadcasts to understand what is going on in the bigger picture world the story takes place in. That is a very realistic aspect since in the real world, if you don't listen to what goes on in your little part of the world, big events will take you by surprise.

Fun game!!
Great game! It plays enough like the other Far Cry games that I was able to figure out how to play fairly quickly, but it's different enough that it feels like a new game. Load times are acceptable for the most part, and I've only encountered a few minor bugs so far, nothing game breaking. It's a LOT of fun to play. I don't know if it will take as long to play as some of the other Far Cry games, but I've only gotten through one region so far. I like that so far, I do not have to skin animals just to upgrade my gear. It seems that the animal skins are just something to collect for money, or challenges. I really don't like killing animals in games.. I don't know why, I have no problem killing human characters in games, but I still have issues with animals. I really don't like that there are ever any dog enemies in any game ever.. NO ONE wants to kill dogs in games, do they?? But, the fact that we can have companions in most situations makes this a little more bearable, because I can just direct my companion to take care of the attacking dog while I run away. I still have to hear them cry sometimes when they're defeated, and that is heartbreaking, but I'm still managing to enjoy the game in spite of that. There is a perk that makes wild animal attacks less likely, but I really wish game developers would stop putting in enemy-dogs that have to be killed. Aside from the animal issue (which is kind of insane since I know it's not real and I don't know why it bothers me!), my other annoyance is that when someone decides to talk to me through the radio, I can no longer talk to anyone else about anything until they are done. So I have to just stand there and wait until whoever it is stops talking so that I can talk to another NPC (some NPCs have tips that lead to new locations or missions). A few times I somehow triggered the exact same "conversation" through the radio over and over again, and I couldn't figure out any way to skip it. Also, there have been a few instances where story related missions just start without warning, and then they end in completely different locations than they started. So if you're almost at a particular location, you have to start all over again to get there. At least fast travel works from anywhere, and doesn't take an excessive amount of time to load. I have not enjoyed driving in any Far Cry game so far, including this one. I find driving to be really difficult in first-person games. There is AutoDrive, but that has its own set of issues (and only works on actual roads). There was one mission that involved chasing a helicopter by car, and I just kept failing that one over and over and over again because I'd get stuck behind a tree or on a rock.. I almost gave up on that one. Finally succeeded, but I think it was just luck. Flying is not as difficult as driving, thankfully -- I have even successfully landed a few times, although once I got the parachute I stopped worrying about landing. I just fly to wherever I want to be, and then jump out and let the plane crash. Fun! Last, though this has nothing to do with the game itself, but I'm annoyed with Amazon for sending me a game with the case all in Spanish (with just a little sticker indicating that the game plays in English). This has no effect on my review of the game, but I specifically bought directly from Amazon instead of a 3rd party seller because I'd noticed that other sellers sometimes indicated that the case was not in English. I was worried about it affecting resale value (the only way I can afford to play new games is if I sell them back as soon as I'm done). So I spent more (and had to pay tax) to make sure the seller was Amazon, and then I received the game in another language anyway. Sigh. But again, that's not about the game -- I am enjoying the game a lot anyway!

Amazing antagonists that rival Vaas in their insanity!
If there’s one thing the Far Cry games are good at, it is creating likeable antagonists. Originally when I purchased this game, I only saw a few trailers and knew of the basic premise of ‘You find yourself trapped by a cult across the majestic plains and mountains of mid-north America.’ I’ve played the Far Cry games since the 3rd one with the introduction of Vaas and his infamous insanity speech. While Far Cry 5’s antagonists did not beat the impact Vaas had on me as a player, this game was pretty damn close! Not a fan of Far Cry 4 or Far Cry Primal, I originally was skeptical. Vaas captured my attention within the first ten minutes of FC3 so I figured I’d give FC5 thirty to sixty minutes to sell me. I knew I was putting FC5 on a huge pedestal to beat out FC3, but the first twenty minutes of FC5 sold me. The eerie and unsafe atmosphere of the church was palpable, the music was spot on, and I felt as lost as Deputy/Rook by the time the prologue of the game was over. There was no escape. Soon enough, I was drowning in FC5. Each playable region in the game (Holland Valley, Henbane River, Whitetail Mountains) offers its own array of music, enemies and individual antagonist that will hunt you down. And when I say hunt you down, I mean it! Everything you do in the region has its consequences – from looting a truck to clearing an enemy outpost to completing missions across the regions. As you gain more experience and resistance points (the system of helping the non-cult residents to fight back against Joseph Seed and the Peggies), you will come face-to-face with the Father and his psychotic family. Familiar with two actors who played the Seed brothers (John Seed – Seamus Dever, Jacob Seed – Mark Pellegrino), I was eager to learn about them and their adopted sister, Faith. I realized they were as damaged as Vaas was in FC3 – if not more. I wasn’t eager to kill them because, though they were monsters, they were victims in their own right – abused and manipulated by Joseph Seed. I applaud the developers for making me care for these characters. I loved the inclusion of fishing and simple exploring. The graphics were so beautiful on my PS4 Pro, I have spent hours just exploring and taking in the sights. The beauty the developers captured have even made me want to take a trip from my busy city-life in New York to the tranquility of Montana. A true sandbox game in nature, I really enjoyed Far Cry 5. I wish there were other things put into the game, such as actual voice actors for the male/female versions of Deputy/Rook, and a variety of choice options that would affect the outcome of the game more than what we’ve seen. Still, a very enjoyable game I’m still playing through today.

Avoid, especially if you were a fan of Far Cry 3.
I have been a pretty big Far Cry fan, particularly with 3. I feel lucky that I waited on this one however, because it is certainly not worth paying much for. The premise is halfway decent, but it is lacking in so many of the areas where the other games have excelled. For one, it feels like a butchered down version of the past two installments. Hunting animals for instance only grants you cash for skins, and no animation is even featured when you collect them. You cannot craft unique items from hunting and collecting animal parts like you could before, and weapon customization is largely absent in this regard as well. Takedowns used to be fun, bloody, and entertaining, and was a prime feature of the previous installments. I feel that while takedowns are present, they are not nearly as fun or interesting in this game, with the exception of new melee objects which all function pretty much identically. Perks used to be fun as well, and somehow this game even made that a lot less exciting. Okay, so on to the character aspect of this game. While I enjoy the ability to create a character, the character who you play as is definitely flat compared to the actual protagonists of previous games. Jason Brody and Ajay Ghale were definitely more rounded, and Jason especially was dynamic from the changes had on him from the island jungle. Personality went far in the other Far Cry installments, and a silent protagonist simply cannot bring this to life. While character customization is cool, it really doesn’t do much for the game itself. As for the other characters, c’mon, a cult leader is definitely supposed to be charismatic and interesting. Such a far cry from the epic villain that was Vaas. My next part of this review, the story. Now while I’m not even very far in the game, nothing about the story has really taken hold of me, and I find it hardly engaging. The concept is interesting, fighting off a tyrannical religious cult in the middle of nowhere U.S.A. However, everything is so watered down from what it could be, and made too politically correct that the purpose of this is kind of lost. Personal disclosure: I actually attended a legitimate religious cult meeting once unbeknownst to me at first, and this game does not even remotely capture that messed up and somewhat terrifying feeling of an encounter with an actual religious cult. Exploration is kinda fun for a while, but then it all eventually seems the same. Vehicles are fun to play around with, although nothing that makes me want to use them more than traversing on foot, besides the speed of travel. I really wanted to get this game to fly around in, as I’m a big fan of aviation in real life. Sadly, you have to really play the game a while to even have that privilege, so it doesn’t necessarily feel worth it. All in all, this game just feels dull. It could have been so much more, but again it just feels gutted in certain areas where the expected Far Cry experience has been lost. Doesn’t immediately even feel like a Far Cry experience honestly. I feel that this game is the equivalent of what Mafia III did with that series. “Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?” It’s literally playing this game for hours expecting the best previous Far Cry experiences, not receiving this and expecting that this will somehow change given enough time. It’s somewhat pretty to look at, but do yourself a solid if you want to explore American wilderness in a meaningful way presented in a video game, and just pick up Red Dead Redemption II instead. At least then you can hunt and skin animals and craft things with their pelts. I thank you for reading my very long and comprehensive review. I apologize for my verbosity, although I truly feel that this game is a far cry from Far Cry, and these are my reasons as to why I believe this.

Awesome Far Cry fun.
I played FC back in 2004 and was amazed at the game world, graphics, the story like "Island of Dr. moreau". I really got into it, but then came Half Life 2 and I forgot about FC till I bought FC 4 on PS4 on sale. FC4....ok game, didn't captivate me, put it aside. Now Primal was a different story. Getting put back in time to 10000 BC really captured my imagination. I loved that game in 2016, favorite by far. After I finished it I was thirsty for more Open world survival games....I returned to Primal playing it with minimal or no hud, and it was amazing. So I decided to return to FC 4 and finish. Enter FC5....sounded amazing but was concerned with "more of the same", why buy when I had so much FC 4 MP fun to have. Prime discount had alot to do w/ FC 5 purchase, figured why not get the discount now and play when I'm don'e w/ FC 4. Got the game, and WOWOWOWOW, I did finish FC 4 a few days before I got FC 5, and I batted FC 4 aside. First the co-op is AMAZING. the Story was scary at first and I really enjoyed putting John Seed down, hated the guy, truly couldn't stand the site of him and what he and Joseph did to people. It's a game, but I didn't expect that emotion toward a game character. So, I'm about 1/4th through the game. Arcade mode has loads of potential, I play the occastional game through the opportunties in the single player campaign. Graphics on my lowly PS4 are amazing. Did experience from huge frame rate drops when the screen and action were high, but I'm sure it will be fixed in a patch, happened only 2 times so far, no biggie. Money well spent, don't listen the nay-sayers. This game is hands-down my game-of-the-year.
