Director Spike Lee was at the height of his powers when he finally got to make Malcolm X , a massively ambitious biopic of the American black civil rights crusader of the film's title. And it's a fascinating movie, one driven through its numerous slower moments by a stunning central performance from Denzel Washington. Magnetic barely covers it. Rightly Oscar-nominated for his work, Washington here is as good as he ever has been, dominating the screen. Particularly when delivering Malcolm X's speeches, he's quite, quite brilliant, able to shift his performance with consummate skill, and give us a rounded portrayal of a hugely important figure in recent American history. The film isn't quite as good as Washington, although it frequently touches greatness. It's also not afraid to dig into controversies surrounding Malcolm X himself, and there's little sign of the story being diluted in any way. If anything, there's a desire to squeeze in perhaps a little too much. Across three hours, it tells the story of Malcolm X , from his formative years through to his death, and it does it with a real sense of period attention, and occasionally an epic feel. That's where the Blu-ray upgrade really helps. The terrific photography is showcased wonderfully in 1080p. Furthermore, the disc has space for an interesting commentary track, featuring Lee himself, as well as deleted scenes, and a look into the making of the film. It's a terrific package, and Malcolm X remains both an important figure, and an important film. The Blu-ray only enhances that. -- Jon Foster Director, writer and producer Spike Lee's film about the life of the controversial black leader Malcolm X, who emerged from the streets to become a powerful voice for the black rights movement in America. The film follows X (Denzel Washington) from his days as a Harlem pusher, through his conversion to Islam in prison, his pilgrimage to Mecca and finally to his assassination. Review: Great movie in which you view the early life of ... - Great movie in which you view the early life of Malcolm x prior to his conversion to Islam. The coverage of his earlier years in terms of his degenerative social activities and crimes committed by young Malcolm was very captivating; prior to his transformation, after he accepted Islam and embarked upon his new path before he rallies for change for black America. A must watch for those not too familiar with the late revolutionary national leader. Review: Must see movie - Brilliant film. It is in two parts as long film and on the second disc you have the documentary which features the real Malcolm X. I will not tell you anything that is in the film as you really must buy it to see the outstanding performance by Denzel Washington as Malcolm X.

A great movie, but read the autobiography first to fully comprehend this era in history
I waited long before watching this movie because I didn't want the movie to change my positive impression of the autobiography by Alex Haley. I am pleassd that I read the book before watching the movie. There are many detailed descpriptions in the book that explaines the environment and the era of Malcolm X. The spiritual journey that Malcolm goes through is so simplified that it feels as if he was an "easy target" and easily influenced by one man's words (the inmate in prison). I strongly recommend reading the book before watching the film, simply because films can't compete with books when it comes to portraying a character. Denzel's interpretation of Malcolm is extraordinary! Such a great actor. Hard to believe he did this role early on in his carrier.

Brilliant!
Sublime performance by Denzel Washington. I am truly surprised he did not win an Oscar for it. I knew Malcolm X was an activist for black people, but that is all I knew about him. This film superbly relays to us his life. Very engrossing.

Loved this film
I had read his auto-biog so wondered how Denzel would do in this part. And he did good I thought. It is interesting as if you then read the biog by Frank Lucas (the main character in the film American Gangster) you see that the lives of the 2 people cross. Get the Malcolm X film, get American Gangsta film and read Frank's book.
