Burpee Organic Coconut Coir Concentrated Seed Starting Mix, 16 Quart
This stuff is great. I wish I knew of this coconut derived soil a long time ago for my house plants. But the awesome part is that it could be dehydrated, compressed into a brick, packaged and shipped like that. It saves quite a bit of weight from needing to be transported. Some of the reviews (more so on some other brands) mention issues with reconstituting the bricks into a full amount of soil. I had none of these problems, and it was remarkably simple to do. I followed the directions, measured the water out and made sure to use warm (filtered) water. The brick instantly sprang to life once I poured the water on it (I used a 5 gallon bucket for one brick and that seemed just right). It took no further work on my part, the brick grew and separated out perfectly until it was just all fluffy soil. No dehydrated brick chunks or excess water remained. I'm definitely ordering more for other potting I need to do.

Strange chemical smell
I purchased this coconut coir thinking that it was plain/untreated so that I could use it to set up a worm farm composter. When I soaked the brick to expand it, it gave off a strange scent. Maybe fertilizer? I was concerned that whatever was making the smell might harm my worms, so I put this coir aside for gardening purposes and used a different brand of coco coir that just smelled like dirt for my worms. Overall it seems like a great product! It has been working well for plants. I only deducted one star because it did smell quite strongly.

Excellent - will buy again
Excellent. Easy to hydrate and work with. I like the consistency over other soil-less starting mixes. No algae on the starting seed well with this.

1st time user -- lifetime buyer!
I was looking for planting soil as my yard is mostly clay-based. I saw this & was immediately intrigued. I purchased 4 to get my seeds started (totally too much lol I underestimated just how much these bricks would yield). I eventually purchased wheel-barrow sized blocks too; just to cover my entire garden. Anyways, my seeds thrived in this soil alternative! I had grow lights & heating mat setup in my seeding room in my basement. The soil has barely any smell to it & it feels like fine potting soil. The leftovers were in a bucket that I covered with a trash bag. It remained wet for weeks after! I eventually dumped it into my outside garden. The only downside I foresee is that this soil will not hold nutrients like regular, in-the-ground soil; so be prepared to have nutrients ready to feed your plants. From my research & trial/errors, I add the following: calcium, magnesium, nitrogen, iron, worm casing fertilizer & nitrogen-based plant food pebbles. Additionally, the soil will dry out in the sun long before the undersoil. So be very, very aware of how much you water your plants. Since this soil dries quickly, you do not want to over-water. That's why I added the worm casing fertilizer; as it is like regular soil & retains moisture. Just keep watch & be vigilant for when you should be watering. Overall, this soil variant is not only cheaper than buying bags of planting soil but it is also not as heavy to carry! Yes there is more upkeep in certain things; but I enjoy gardening work so I don't mind spending extra time doing it.

Excellent Seed Starting Medium!
I have used Burpee seed starting products before, and always found them to be high quality. This was the first time using the Burpee Organic Coconut Coir Concentrated Seed Starting Mix, 16 Quart, but it won't be my last! It is now my favorite seed starting medium. It arrives as a dehydrated block, wrapped in a thin plastic. I was suspicious of how it would absorb the water and rehydrate, as I've found highly dehydrated products challenging to rehydrate quickly. However, I was impressed with how easy it was to fully rehydrate this starting mix. I added it to a bucket, added the suggested amount of water and within just a few minutes the water was absorbed and the seed mix was rehydrated. I was able to have my seeds sown and ready to germinate within an hour of the package arriving at my door! My seeds germinated well, and have gone on to produce high-quality seedlings. I didn't use all the mix in one go, once rehydrated it expanded, and there was more than I needed for my trays. I stored the bucket in my garage until I needed it again a few weeks later. The water had evaporated from the mix, but I was able to add more water and quickly be ready to sow more seeds. I will be ordering more once this has run out. I highly recommend the seller and the product.
