How is the mark on the leather removed?

Wipes off with water when fresh usually, can be removed with mineral spirits if it's dried a long time on automotive vinyl or automotive leather. Test an inconspicuous area on vegetable tanned hide to see if mineral spirits removes the natural dye first. Many non-bleach household cleaners will wash it off too. It's not hard to get off.

Are there instructions for inserting the refills? I can't seem to figure it out!

There's a screw-on tip on the pen barrel that once removed allows you to insert the refills. Replace the screw on retainer and the pen is ready to use. The plastic cap helps to keep the pen from drying out.
