I want to come at this with a clear, "I'm not paid, I didn't receive this thing free, I have no agenda other than praising very, very good products". I'm sort of a "prosumer" audiophile. I built speakers from scratch (including designing and building crossover circuits) when I was in high school. I have bought and thoroughly tested dozens of powered bluetooth speakers, only keeping the ones that produce truly good, enjoyable sound. About a dozen of the best-of-the-best are strewn about the house. I've returned speakers from Cambridge, JBL, Klipsch, Harmon Kardon, that just failed to perform. The ones I keep make great sound, albeit with slightly different trims, emphasis, sound stage, depth. I lump them into three categories: ultra-portable, portable, and stationary. Ultra-portables are the kind you can slide into a bookbag for a day at the park, or small luggage for a business trip. Portables can be carried but are their own "piece of luggage". Stationary ones are... exactly that. There are several VERY good stationary speakers - Bose SoundTouch, Aiwa Exos 9, Marshall Woburn, the excellent Cambridge Air Minx 200, and my personal heavyweight champ, the Polk Woodbourne. There are also several VERY good portables. The ones I kept and use weekly if not daily are the Bang & Olufsen Beolit 15, the Marshall Kilburn, and hands-down the single best-sounding single-cabinet powered bluetooth speaker ever made as far as I can tell, the astounding and unsinkable Klipsch KMC-3. In the ultra-portable space... not so much. I've tried and returned due to severe lack of performance, the Klipsch Groove, Cambridge OontZ Angle 3XL and Riva Turbo X. The only ultra-portable speaker I've tried - which I do own but don't use very often - is the Sony SRS-X5 (succeeded by the SRS-X55), which does a very good job, very comparable to the SoundLink Mini but a bit bigger and, after a refresher head-to-head test just yesterday - can't reproduce bass notes that the SoundLink Mini can hit. This speaker is pretty, solid, and the sound it produces is the kind where an unsuspecting subject will have a jaw-drop response, and you will inevitably say, "Yes, that sound is coming out of that little thing." It is tailored to optimal performance at moderate listening volumes in mid-sized rooms, but does well in the full expanse of use cases, even producing great bass, sparkling treble and terrific soundstage out on the driveway when working on the car. As far as I can tell, the market has completely failed to reproduce the sound quality this unit is capable of, at any price, without a much larger cabinet. The all-time best wireless powered speaker ever made is still very clearly the Klipsch KMC-3. I'm not sure we will ever get to enjoy one better than that. I love my KMC-3 so much that I bought a backup to put on the shelf for the day the first one dies - given that I use it exclusively outdoors - and occasionally, sadly, I forget to put it away overnight, so it ends up in the dew or rain now and again. Yes, I'm an idiot. That's why I bought a backup. But there are only two other speakers good enough that I bought seconds: the Polk Woodbourne, a very sexy, attractive, sleek and spectacularly big-sounding stationary speaker, and the Soundlink Mini. I bought the Mini II as my travel mate for business trips because my wife uses the original SoundLink Mini so often. My advice as someone who has spent (wasted) way too much time and way too much money trying to find the absolute best, is, 1) buy yourself a Klipsch KMC-3 before new-old-stock runs out, you simply must, you can't not; and 2) for sleek, awesome design and top-shelf sound quality out of an itty bitty speaker, this - the Bose SoundLink Mini - is the final word. Nobody has matched or surpassed it, for any price. The Bose wins. It doesn't matter whether the one you're considering costs $100 or $500. This one is better, and realistically, your only option for the Best of the Best. Happy listening!

I bought this speaker as a package with the Echo Dot (which as of today 9/25/17 is being offered again at a cheaper price even than I paid for it). The speaker is compact but has amazingly full sound for it's size. It looks really great and is a solidly built speaker. At first, I had it connected to my Dot via Bluetooth, and I loved being able to move it to different parts of my house. However, because I like the Echo products so much, I ended up getting some of the original Echoes on Prime Day, which limited the need to carry this speaker around my house. Still, this speaker is far superior to the Echo built-in speaker, so I would use it on the main level of my house exclusively. I took this speaker with me on a family vacation, and the house we rented was full of Sonos speakers (mostly Play:3s), and my mother-in-law commented that the Bose actually sounded more full than the Sonos, despite the fact that it was competing with about three of those speakers. While I can't quite agree with her, I can say that the sound coming from the Bose speaker wasn't far behind, and I found myself using it more than the Sonos, since using my own phone with Bluetooth to play my music was a lot easier than trying to find music through the iPad that had the Sonos app on it. (If the sound difference had been greater, I would have spent more time using the Sonos). In the end, however, I decided that having a portable (battery powered) speaker wasn't the right way to go with the Dot for me. Because I own a few Echo speakers and once multi-room music was introduced (which disconnects from a portable bluetooth speaker anyway), the Bose made less and less sense. While this speaker does have a 3.5 mm line-in port (which is the only way to use external speakers with multi-room music), it didn't make sense to keep using a battery-powered speaker if I wasn't going to move it around. I ended up getting this Klipsch system, which is a bit cheaper and does sound quite a bit better, too: Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX Certified Computer Speaker System (Black) . Granted, the Klipsch takes up a lot more space and has a lot of wires, which worked fine with where I wanted it set up in my house. I still use the Bose Soundlink Mini II when I'm working in my basement and occasionally I'll take it to my office (where I don't have any Echo products) using the Bluetooth connection with my iPhone. I still think it's a great speaker with great sound, and I appreciate it more now again that I'm using it as a portable speaker. I definitely plan on taking it with me anytime my family goes on vacation as well.

I am not a sound expert. I have some deafness in one ear. I can, however, tell the big difference between this unit and my JBL which I still love. The JBL I use for all audio programs with speaking, classes, conferences, podcasts and so on. I can also take it outside to play my music loud while I am gardening! Don't have to worry about it getting wet. That said, the sound is not like a stereo. It is nice, however, not quality by any means. I decided to try this Bose because I found a used Bose speaker for a girlfriend at Goodwill. It blew me away! Wow! She could have a block party with that little thing! So I decided to try this one. I played some classical music when I first got this Bose and was So DELIGHTED at the improved richness in the music and the better tones! Very happy with this speaker. It has a speaking mode that tells you if the battery gets low, or what unit you are connected to and so on. You can turn it off if you wish. One feature I do love, is that you can connect to... I think 8 devices! I only have 3, however, once linked, I never have to fiddle with it again. If I turn off my computer and turn music on my iPad it immediately goes to the iPad and begins playing its music! No hassle and I don't have to do anything! Not as easy with the JBL. I love them both as they both serve different purposes. Also the JBL I can take almost anywhere in my 65 foot mobile home and it stays connected. The Bose is limited to 30 feet. Again I Love the improved sound quality and highly recommend it for a small speaker for your computer! Not a stereo by any means, however, heads above most computer speakers I have heard!
