Product Description Todd Field directs this ensemble drama based on the novel by Tom Perrotta. Kate Winslet stars as Sarah, an educated young suburban mother frustrated with her narrow existence, who forges a friendship with local husband and father Brad (Patrick Wilson). Both share a discontentment with life in their small commuter town, and a lack of connection with their spouses: Sarah's uncomfortable marriage to the successful Richard (Gregg Edelman) parallels Brad's frustration with his aspirational documentary maker wife, Kathy (Jennifer Connelly), and it isn't long before their friendship develops into a more complex entanglement. Meanwhile, the community is shaken by the discovery that a convicted sex offender (Jackie Earle Haley) is living in its midst. .co.uk Review Kate Winslet operates at a galaxy-class level in Little Children, Todd Field's gratifyingly grown-up look at unhappy suburbia. Winslet is magnificent, in an Oscar-nominated performance, as a stroller-pushing mother who becomes attracted to a passive househusband (Patrick Wilson). Their slow-burning infidelity (Field wisely allows time to pass in this unhurried film) is contrasted with a more sensational subplot, about a convicted pedophile (Jackie Earle Haley, also Oscar nominated) returning to the neighborhood to live with his mother (Phyllis Somerville). Field, who brought his civilized approach to In the Bedroom, uses a deliberately literary style here, including a device with a narrator who sounds as though he's sitting at our side as he reads from Tom Perotta's novel. (The narrator is a superb touch--his cultivated voice distances us from the sloppy passions of the characters.) The film's biggest miscalculation is a self-appointed neighborhood vigilante (Noah Emmerich) determined to make life miserable for the paedophile. But Wilson is appropriately nebulous, Jennifer Connelly solid as his wife, and Haley (child star of the Bad News Bears movies), as the creepy, childlike molester, found himself rediscovered after a long career layoff. There's decent acting here, but Winslet is in a zone of her own, with so much emotional honesty and subtlety of expression that she transforms a good movie into a must-see. --Robert Horton

Be careful what you wish for........
I don't want to spoil your enjoyment by giving the plot away so will give just a broad outline. The main plot is strong & develops at a good pace however there are also a couple of sub-plots which also roll along nicely. Central to them both is the theme that people find themselves in situations that they no longer enjoy but feel trapped until something happens to give them a sight of what could be.The film has an interesting commentary feature, more prevalent at the beginning, which helps the development of the story & also makes me believe it could work very well as a play.A slow burner but worth watching & gives food for thought about what people really want & settle for.

Thought-provoking
This is a movie which I would recommend to anyone. despite its flaws, adequately enumerated by other reviewers here, the message(s) of the movie are unusual and the whole so well acted, particularly by Ms Winslet, that this is really a must-see. It is very unusual to show the life of a paedophile in such detail and the point here, in relation to all the main characters, is that it is appropriate to have empathy, sympathy even, for anyone - i.e. there's something worthwhile in all. Also, regarding the title, it struck me afterwards that the writer was postulating that none of us is really mature - each of the key characters take decisions/actions at some point here that are not those of so-called mature sensible grown-ups, but which are plausible nonetheless. A difficult to categorise movie because of the various plots and the occasional disturbing scenes (the paedophile on his date was particularly tragic), but one that is ultimately a rewarding and enjoyable watch, despite the slow pace.

Theme of sexual perversion sensitively handled
Little Children revolves round the theme of a paedophile in an American neighbourhood and also the larger theme of middle class married life. Kate Winslet give what could have been a drab movie a special edge by her sensitive portrayal of a middle class housewife caught in a an unhappy marriage. Like most American women she finds recourse and revenge in the first handsome male she sees, aggressively getting on to him at the first opportunity she gets in a park. Now you know what it is going to lead to. In this case a frenetic bout of sex in her house while both their kids have conveniently gone to sleep. There is of course some sort of redemption at the end of the movie . Lets say redemption in this case is bloody with the much-mailgned paedophile cutting off his organ and his accuser taking him to hospital and all the rest of it. Little Children is not a great movie, but will pass by as an average indie film that is another showcase for Winslet's acting prowess. The rest is all average stuff.

Surprising and startling story
Two unhappy individuals, both married to other people, played beautifully by Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson, are brought together in extraordinary circumstances. A fantastic supporting rôle also played by Noah Emmerich.Exquisite, clever and entertaining.

Lost the plot or what
I am starting to believe not to go by one or two reviews when choosing a film to buy. This film has brilliant ratings at first glance and even once I bought it my eyes were drawn to "the best film of the year" hmm. The start looked promosing with Kate Winslet giving a great performance but within half an hour it was all about waiting for something to happen, and it never did! Not that it was slow, just the plot kind of lost the plot! Nothing really happened! I like to tell friends about good films but this one definatley isn't going to be brought up (unless I want to bore people to death)

Avoid at all costs unless you have insomnia
What a stinker. I gave it an hour and realised that I didn't care what the outcomes might be. I would particularly like to single out Will Lyman who was the narrator in the film - there is a lot of narration as its taken from a book. I've looked him up on IMDB and apparently he's in great demand as a narrator. In this film I can only describe his style as deadpan, which I'm sure is what he was aiming for, but having all lines delivered in the same monotonous tone really got in the way of caring about the characters. It got to the point where I began to think that perhaps I was watching one of those really clever comedies, that aren't funny. Having said that, switched off after an hour, went to bed and slept like a top. Cheaper than sleeping pills and certainly less addictive.

Simply a great drama
I am not very good at writing reviews so i hardly do it. This film is so good i am writing a review. I am a big film lover and look for anything with a strong story with and a unique twist. This film delivers. Wonderfully acted by everyone and hauntingly beautiful in it's direction. I don't want to say anything about the story because i think i would spoil it. If you love a well written story then watch this film!
