Definitely Worth the Money!!
I know it's a trash can but it's the PERFECT trash can. The lid opens easily, closes slowly, the finish and fit are perfect and it looks great in our kitchen.

Sleek, sturdy, stylish, rugged
Look and function meet expectations. Second simplehuman trash can and they are worth the investment. My favorite part of the design is that it hides the garbage bag from view which I believe distracts from the aesthetics in other brands. Also the lid ticks inside a lip to keep nosey dogs honest

Company known for high-quality, well-designed products.
Pricy, but buying ultimately saves money in the long run, as quality lasts, while discount products are designed to rapidly fall apart. This brand is well-known for making high-quality products, the can has one opening for trash, and another for emptying. Best of all, their trash bags are stronger, more durable than ‘normal’ trash bags, and it comes with a replaceable oder control in it’s lid.

Terrific Quality
This is the only garbage can I will ever own. This thing is great. It doesn't smell, it lasts years (we were gifted two when we we got married 5+ years ago and both still work perfectly). Easy to clean too. Buying proprietary can liners is annoying but worth it ... and we occasionally use non branded ones, they just don't fit as well.

Best trash can I've ever used, but not dog proof :(
I was hesitant to spend this much on a trash can, but so many reviews talked about it being dog proof. I was ready to spend any amount to solve my dog & trash issue. For the first week things were great. The can holds a ton of trash (thanks to the very cool custom bags and fit removing an inner bucket.) The step was smooth and silent. It closes flush and therefore seemed to solve the dog problem. It also is exceptional at holding in odors. In fact my husband and I both commented that we were oddly attached and impressed with this trash can. Not something I expected to get so much pleasure from, but alas it really is an amazing product. That is until today. Three of my dogs are large and crafty but were not able to get into the can. The largest did step on the lever once but he wasn't smart enough to know what he did or how to do it again. He is a normal dog so that makes sense. The smallest dog (pictured) was able to break in. The thing is I'm not sure if I can blame the product. You see this little yellow lab is actually a rabid raccoon in a dog's body. Her intelligence, dedication and dexterity defy the laws of biology and physics. As you can see there is no remorse in her eyes, despite my being 8 months pregnant and needing to clean this up by crawling around on the floor. That isn't pictured because you can bet that if anyone else was home to take the photo, they would have been cleaning this up instead of me. In conclusion, who should splurge on this product? People without animals - absolutely! People with normal pets - you bet! People tricked into adopting a radicalized terrorist parading around in a cute dog disguise - definitely no.

Expensive, but good quality
This is the first time we've purchased a "Robot" garbage can that wasn't the EKO brand that Costco carries. Costco always seems to have the one EKO can that they swap out every year for their newest "improved" can, and for one reason or the other, we've bought a new one nearly every year. I am going to talk about our previous 3 robots from EKO to establish our experience with them, and why this can is set apart, but I will try to be brief. Our first EKO was tall and loud. The motor could be heard across the house. The liner was held by a inner ring, the kind where you stuff the bag into the main can, fit the ring inside the bag into the channel in the can, and then fold the top of the bag back in on itself and put the lid on. It was fine, but left us with a goopy top of bag trying to pull it out to switch it out, and you had to fight the whole can to get it out. The next EKO we got turned out to be the best of the trio. They shortned it and made it wider, but they added an inner can for the bag, so when it came to take the garbage out, you pulled the inner can, which slid out easily, but the lid and mechanism always got super gross. The third, which was very closely modeled after the second, was not really as good, despite the tech improvements because they didn't address how easily the mechanism was affected by the garbage gunk that got on it, but the whole thing fried out 6 months after we got it, and it too 2 months for the company to replace it because they don't put model info on the can. So, during that 2 months of anger, I decided to buy elsewhere. We got way too used to the robot cans, because not needing to step or touch anything to toss stuff is great. This doesn't have an independent inner can, so I worried that taking it out would be a fight like our first can was, but unlike all 3 EKO cans, the lid doesn't have to be entirely lifted off and removed to change it out. It doesn't come off at all, for that matter. Instead it just opened on a hinge. So that alone made the risk worth it to me. The shape and wide openness of the opening was great because it means the lid and lip won't get goopy because it's hard to miss when dumping the goopier stuff now. The mechanism is also nearly impossible to get goopy due to the smart design. The hinge doesn't take anything back in with it at all. This can has no operational buttons. You cannot manually open this can. The trio of EKO's we had all had open and close buttons, and when you used the open buttons the cans would stay open until you hit the close button. This can does not have those. It will only open if triggered, but unlike the previous cans, the area of sensing is smarter, so the can stays open the whole time you are in front of it, so it won't close prematurely as you are throwing stuff out. The others close after a set amount of time, and their sense range is very small. Worst case, if you have to open the can manually, you can just grab the base of the whole lid, as if to take the bag out, and just lift that. It holds itself open so you can get the bag out, so it'll hold itself open for you to come and go as needed for that moment. The last big point is the bags themselves. They do make bags that are designed specifically to fit the height and width of this can, and it comes with a free 10 pack sample of them. It has the little dispenser pocket in the back. Such a wonderful idea on both ends, with 2 big flaws. One is that the bags themselves aren't very sturdy. The first bag we used, the hand strings broke, right away, when trying to pull it out of the can. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, but this happened multiple times over the course of the free sample pack. You can actually feel a kind of "fragile" feeling to them, almost like brittle plastic, rather than the more rubberized plastics you get with Kirkland Signature and Glad. The second is cost. If you look at the two ways you can get the custom bags, compared to the Kirkland Signature big box of universal bags, you can see a steep cost difference. Kirkland rings in at 8 cents a bag. The Amazon branded bags ring in at 14 cents a bag. And the on brand bags ring in at 19 cents a bag. So, with Kirkland you lose the firmer fit at the opening, and the form fitting inside, but you still get a good enough fit on both, as the lid mechanism holds the opening in place, and the bag itself still fills the space just fine, but you are paying a lot less money for them. You also lose the cool dispenser, but looking at the bigger packs of Amazon bags, you lose the dispenser there too. Getting on brand bags with the dispenser packs is even more expensive. So it's hard to see the overall value for money in this can if you plan to use their bags. If you can afford the jump in price for stuff like that, no big deal, but if you are operating on a budget, you may want to reconsider, or just do what we do and just use the Kirkland bags still. Either way, the can is overall great, compared to what we have used in the past. Robot cans are definitely cool, but do your research and don't just buy whatever seems cool. The EKO brand cans usually ring in at about $50, and as you read above, they have some pretty annoying fatal flaws. So if you want one to be reliable, and better covered by the manufacturer, look into ones like this one. Even though it's more expensive.

Keeps smells out of the house. Looks great. It says to use special liners, but a regular garbage bag is fine.
