Would this fit a 6" 686 S&W?

no problem. I have the Ruger GP 100 ( 6") in this case. Same dimension as the 686. Good fit.

The picture doesn't show it, but do you have the updated foam that holds mags in between the guns?

The case I received does have the foam that holds the mags between the gun slides and on the grip ends of the guns. It holds a total of 22 mags in the case not including those in the firearms.

Will I be able to fit my smaller guns in here like an m&p shield, a ruger lc9s, sig p250, and glock 26?

the smallest gun I have in my collection is a sig 938. I don,t think you will have a problem. As you remove the foam you can adjust each individual slot for the firearm you are storing. I would recomend the case, it,s extremely well built and is tough as nails, you won,t be disappointed

Will it hold compact pistols like springfield xds 3.3"? or will they just slide around due to small size? i need a case that securely will transport

I have an XDS 3.3 in .45acp. It fits fine as there is a step down to accommodate the grip so it stays put. I can even put my Automag with 11 barrel in it because the foam is soft enough to allow for the extra length. This is a very well made case
