Can this mop go in the washing machine?

Yes I wash it in the machine after each use but only a short wash if 20 min perfect!

yes this is a screw on /off mop head.

Does this need a nail being put threw it

If you have not got the proper connection to your mop handle, I would definitely recommend securing it by either a nail or a screw, you need to make sure the handle sits right down into the mop head.
