I can see why others have referred to this item as being a 'replica', because it is. But saying that, its still a good tool! I recently bought a full size pick mattock to double-dig a flower bed of 6 meters, in readiness for my recently constructed 3, 1 meter square raised beds. When you see how effective a tool like this is in full size, you know its going to be very useful for smaller areas too. My next task is to reduce the size of my lawn and lay Smartedge along a 5 meter border. This tool will be much needed for that job, because I need to create a good swale as I go along. Update: 25 May 2015 I have used this tool almost every week since it arrived. The paint is intact and the blade is very robust. I don't know what I'd do without this handy tool, its a life-saver on clay soil.

Small and genuinely useful pickaxe
This is light enough to carry in your backpack and just enough to do what I need it to. I use mine for digging out the top layer of stony subsoil, essential for effective drainage from mountain bike trails. I've broken a couple of folding 'entrenching' tools trying to do this, this pick is much more effective. Whack the pick in and lever up, then drag the adze end through the broken soil to loosen it. You still need a folding spade to dig out the loosened sub-soil, but this is a game changer for me. Sure I could go and get one of our full sized pickaxes but there are miles of trails and hundreds of drains! Although the handle might seem like a poor fit it worked fine for me, you just bang the end of the handle on the ground as with a full-size pickaxe.

useful for small jobs around the garden like removing plants ...
useful for small jobs around the garden like removing plants roots or ivy. it can cut through ever larger roots and is small enough for areas where there is not enough space to work with larger tools. it will definitely need sharpening if used in rocky soils.

solid tool
Well impressed with this chunk. It comes in a very bushcrafty canvas sheath with the shaft stored alongside the mattock head into a neat palm to elbow length package that would easily strap on a pack. The head has 750g stamped into it and is one solid chunk. The handle is painted green and is simply shaped to allow easy assembly. It is designed to come apart between uses by the looks of it can't wait to get it into the field for a test. Impressed so far.
