How much hold does it give?

This product is light and not flaky. With my hair it holds for one day. What I really like about this product is it makes my hair easy to comb and soft. I have been natural about 6 months.

what does this smell like?

It doesn't really have any smell to me - I use a dab the size of a quarter though, so it might be that I'm not using enough of it to have a smell build up.

Would this work for coarse, thick, curly hair? Does it weigh hair down?

I have coarse, thick, curly hair and it works well for me-- definitely doesn't weigh it down!

Would you recommend this product for long coarse, curly, thick, unruly caucasion hair?

Try a sample size first. The curling Jelly has a tendancy to curly the hair tighter than with other curl defining products. I suspect that a conditioner would serve you well, but I am no expert. Consider asking an Aveda professional. They use superior products that perform well with ALL hair types.
