Good quality product, if it is a genuine Canon LP-E8 battery of course...
Official Canon accessories are rather overpriced but are of good quality, so buying a second LP-E8 battery for my 550D at a substantial discount on Amazon Marketplace seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately it appears that there are some counterfeit batteries doing the rounds, whether the Marketplace sellers are aware of it or not! I only received what I believed to be a genuine Canon battery upon ordering the product for the third time... The two seemingly dodgy batteries that I received first of all did look quite reasonably convincing in their packaging, but when removing them and comparing them with the battery that came with the 550D there were some very obvious differences: the dodgy batteries were both slightly more grey than white, had a different texture, featured less well defined text (one of them tellingly had a spelling mistake on it as well!), did not feature a sticker over the indented panel on the end of the battery above and to the right of the electrical contacts, both featured the date(?) "200912" and the code "VLYA" at the bottom right of the face with the voltage and capacitance figures printed on it, and just had an outline of a triangle with a black exclamation mark printed inside it on the 'warning' face instead of a solid black triangle with the exclamation mark in white inside it. The genuine battery looked exactly the same as the battery that came with the 550D and was presented in sealed packaging that caused some minor damage to the cardboard backing when removing the outer plastic case, whereas the case for the other two batteries had un-clipped from the cardboard without breaking a seal or causing any damage. Also, the Canon hologram on the packaging of the genuine battery had an opaque bar top and bottom with a translucent bar in the middle with Canon printed on it, whereas the dodgy batteries had 100% opaque holograms. Hopefully these details will be useful in determining whether a genuine Canon LP-E8 battery has been delivered!

Review
I would recommend this item. The pros and cons are as follows: Pros: - The battery was on offer when I purchased it, making it a good deal. - The item has a decent battery life (although I have not tried other batteries for comparison). - The item has a case to protect the electrodes. Cons: - You can purchase cheaper batteries, although I don't know how they perform in comparison. Also, make sure they don't void your DSLR's warranty (I haven't researched this). Summary: If you need a canon LP-E8 battery, I would recommend this battery as it works well. You may also want to consider cheaper alternatives if this is not on offer, although you should research whether this affects your warranty, and also research their performance in comparison. This battery is adequate in terms of performance: I use two batteries per outing.

Genuine product
Price at order was £45 (21st December 2020). Back in October 2020 I bought a used Canon 600D for my venture into astrophotography. It was a few years old and came with the original battery plus four additional non-genuine spare batteries which I figured would keep me going throughout the night. Since astrophotography takes place at night, it's usually cold (especially during winter) and cold temperatures significantly reduce battery life. The genuine Canon battery was lasting 3 hours @ 0C off a full charge whilst all four non-genuine batteries would show half charge after just 20 minutes of use at this temperature, and then fail. So I decided to buy a replacement, genuine Canon battery. This Canon battery is a genuine product, it contains all the correct markings/labelling as expected and you receive a yellow plastic cover to protect the terminals when stored in your camera bag. The size is exactly the same, so fits my Canon 600D with no problems. The battery charges using the original charger as expected and battery life is the same as my original battery at around 3 hours @ 0C so no complaints there. It's also good to know that this battery will continue to perform after many years given that the performance of the new battery is on par with the older battery which came with my camera, so I know it will last in the long run. Given my negative experience with non-genuine LP-E8 batteries, I was hesitant to buy off-brand batteries. In this case, quality costs money and I'm happy with my purchase.

So far it works OK
This new battery is lighter in weight and battery life doesn't last as long as the original, but it works and fits perfectly so I've given it a 4 star rating, definately worthy as a back up.

Canon Battery - LP-E8
I ordered the Canon Battery LP-E8 two days ago with Gadgetstore (Fulfilled by Amazon), and with the normal delivery option, it is here already. So credit to the suppliers and couriers for getting it here in such time. In regards to the product itself, it cannot be flawed. I made sure I had ordered an original Canon branded battery as for the little extra cost, you get so much more security knowing that your £500+ DSLR will remain safe. Some cheaper unbranded batteries have been known to malfunction or not even fit into the charger! Too much hassle for only saving a few pounds I think. However, this is not to say that all non Canon batteries are inadequate, there are some that are of decent quality. Just avoid the cheap or used ones. Anyway, the product itself... It was in the original Canon packaging and in the orange protector case that holds the battery. This was at first stiff and removing the battery may take some time, but after a few times it begins to loosen and won't be a problem. The battery works absolutely fine and will serve well as a back up battery.

I have ordered this battery from Amazon, but also utilized price matching at my local store. I could use amazon's price and actually see the product for myself! WIN WIN situation! Based on other reviews for random batteries, it seems like you'll be gambling on receiving a 3rd party knockoff or an authentic Canon battery. I just want to say right away that the battery I received from amazon as a seller was 100% authentic. I had no problems with it and it was exactly the same battery received with my Canon T4i camera. I like to have back up batteries just in case something happens, but when I invested in a battery grip for this camera, I wanted to have 1-2 more on hand than what I already had. I went to my local store who matches prices on amazon as long as they are in stock on here and sold by amazon themselves. I was able to see before buying and make sure they were authentic Canon batteries and got it for the same price amazon offered which was the "best buy" for me ;) Saved about 40% from what the store wanted. I just wanted to write this review to offer some help to someone on the fence being nervous if they were gonna get a cheap knock off or not. This may be a solution for you. With all that being said, onto the battery. I prefer the authentic Canon batteries because they are the most reliable in my opinion. Sure they cost a bit more compared to the cheaper brands, but it's my preference and I have had no issues with Canon's batteries. The longevity seems great on a charge, and there hasn't seemed to be any downfall on shots per charge the whole time I've had this after many, many charges. I also recently got the 6D camera which doesn't take these batteries and invested in an additional LP-E6 for that from the local store just to be safe. Canon batteries to me are the way to go. If you wanna save on some money for camera items, pick something else... at least that's how I feel. I totally recommend this product, but like I said, make sure you are getting the real deal. Hopefully this review gives you some ideas on how to insure that happens.

The items arrived in what seemed to be legitimate packaging. They come with the orange clip-on cover and an instruction booklet. I charged them up fully before using them. These batteries seem to last as long as the original Canon battery that came with my DSLR. No issues with them, although I haven't used them extensively yet. Also, I haven't used them out in colder temperatures yet. So I can't comment on that. So far, so good.
