Small, silent, huge storage, USB powered - amazing drives for maid data storage and backups
Wow! So much capacity in such a small device.I bought three off these beauties, one for my main data storage and two for backups. One backup stays next to the computer while the other one travels with me wherever I go, they are small enough to put in your pocket. I use the Mudder Hard Drive Bag Carry Case for Seagate Expansion and Backup, and WD My Passport Ultra (Old Model) 2.5 Inch Portable External Device to keep mine safe when out and about. Four Terabytes is enormous! I have partitioned them up so I can back up my wife's Macbook as well. I use the terrific SuperDuper application to create bootable clones of our Macs and these drives copy and boot without problems, just use Disk Utilities to format them to Mac Journalled and they are good to go.I have had no speed issues with using one of these as my main data storage and the cost saving over buying my Macbook with a measly 1tb SDD is huge - and these drives hold 4tb, wow! I can play HD video from them without problems, edit video using Final Cut Pro, everything works perfectly. Of course they are not as fast as an SDD but they are fast enough, I have noticed no speed problems with data transfer or running any applications They are silent in operation and did I mention the storage? Yep, 4tb, that is amazing!

Great product, been using for years and very little issues
Great quality drives. I've been using these and their previous model for running clients backup software to for the past 5 years or so.In all that time and probably over 100+ drives I've only seen one fail and that was down to it being dropped while still connected. Despite that the warranty replacement was fairly quick and painless compared to many I've had to deal with over the years despite it being user error for the fail. When first connected you can go into the root of the drive and there is a setup program to allow you to register the warranty (basically it links straight back to Seagate's main registration site) so you can do this quickly and easily - especially when registering a batch at once.Drive has a decent length power adapter cable (approx. 2 meters) and a 1 meter or so USB connector. LED light only comes on when both cables are connected and active so don't worry if it appears inactive at first with just power cable attached. Also has changeable plug for a European AC socket if you're so inclined.Transfer speeds are good and the drive doesn't weight a ton so are great for taking offsite at night for backup purposes.I also use these myself at home for storage and have one hooked up to an Xbox one for additional drive space. Ended up having to format it on a laptop first before the xbox would recognise and add it (after doing its own format) but I think that was more down to the xbox than the drive itself.Overall I couldn't recommend these drives higher for their mix of good pricing, reliability and ease of use. When buying backup drives for clients these are the fist stop we look at unless specialist (encrypted or rugged) drives are required.

A good no-frills external drive
This is about as simple as an external drive gets. And that's mostly a good thing, because for most people (using a modern version of Windows) it will be plug and play. The extra software supplied with more fancy drives for things like backup and encryption is at best unnecessary (since there are better alternatives freely available) and at worst a source of errors and frustration. My only criticisms, and why it loses one star, are where the simplicity and cost-cutting has perhaps gone too far. Unlike my previous Toshiba external drives, these have no power switch on the unit, which means (after using your operating system's Eject function) power down relies on you physically pulling the power plug or, if you have one, using the switch on your mains power socket. Another aspect I question is the use of a micro USB 3.0 socket on the unit rather than the larger and more robust looking full size socket. It's still a standard, but tracking down a replacement lead if you lose the one supplied will be a little harder than one with a full size plug at both ends.We will see how well it lasts, but no disk drive lasts forever. That's why a sensible backup strategy uses TWO external drives, one onsite and regularly updated, and one offsite with a friend or relative. Periodically swap the two around.Pros:- simple to use- cheap- widely compatible - docs mention Windows and Mac, and I have it working with Linux fine.Cons- no power switch- micro USB 3.0 socket on drive rather than full size USB 3.0 size
