ESV Study Bible, Large Print (TruTone, Brown/Cordovan, Portfolio Design)

I purchased the hardback version of this Study Bible and I was impressed at the quantity and quality of the information presented but even though I could read the print, It was harder to read the annotations. I felt that the larger print version was a good fit. Amazon offered this portfolio version at a special price,which is an exceptional value. Love the vintage look! The maps are not in full color but at this price and for my needs that doesn't bother me. At over 3,000 pages, it is a monster, but if you already own the standard hardback version, they're roughly the same footprint. I measured them against each other. (The personal size is much smaller.) The 10.75 font in the Biblical text is comfortable to read, making much it easier to dive into God's Word. I keep reading these reviews about tired, aging eyes, but younger people suffer eye strain from using technology. They could benefit from larger print also. But note that large print does not equate giant print. It will be a comfortable read for most-- but not all, unfortunately. I love, love, love this Study Bible. I have been looking for one for a while, and I am so happy I purchased this edition. This ESV Study Bible is exceptional. The TruTone cover is soft, durable, and gorgeous. The large-print text is crisp and easy to read on thick, opaque paper. It lies flat, with gilded edges, and a ribbon. The content is unmatched: 20,000+ scholarly notes, verse-by-verse commentary, cross-references, full-color maps, charts, and 50+ articles. A Reading Plan and Concordance complete this wonderful Study Bible.

This is a very nice, very beautiful Bible. The cover is nice material, and I love the color. The text is large enough to help with aging eyes, larger text would result in a Bible so huge you would need a forklift to move it. All the extras notes, explanations, maps, etc are very helpful. I got so lucky to get this on sale at under 40 bucks, thank you God. This is an heirloom Bible, you can use it for generations to come. It's big, it's heavy, and it's worth every penny you spend on it.

I bought the large print as a gift for someone and I also have the regular print one for myself. By far this is my favorite study Bible. Another family member also got the large print, both individuals said that the print size was nice and legible. If you're looking for a study Bible in general this is one that you can't go wrong in. As far as the doctrine in the notes goes, they themselves explain in the beginning that the intent was to interpret the Bible as-is, as best they could. The notes lean towards predestination, continuation of spiritual gifts (including speaking in tongues, prophecy, healing, etc.), women not being elders/senior pastors, Jesus' and Paul's respect for women, how man and woman are equal in image and value with different functions, why homosexuality is sin, and I'm sure many other topics. While I only included those main points, and the reader does not necessarily have to agree with all of the commentators, it already shows that they truly tried to be impartial. Each issue is thoroughly explained with Bible references. Throughout the notes you will also see extra biblical references and even some references to the apocryphal writings, but strictly only as historical references, not doctrinal issues, this simply proves that they used external literature in their research and study, which is helpful to know and understand. In the back there are many articles regarding different topics, from theology to biblical ethics to world religions and different "christian" sects. I will include a few titles of the different articles here. The Canon of scripture The Apocrypha The reliability of the New testament manuscripts The reliability of the Old testament manuscripts The Septuagint Homosexuality Divorce and remarriage The end of life Bioethics (cloning, taking life, etc) Abortion Civil Government War The trinity And many others. If you found any of this interesting, it's definitely a great Bible to consider.

This bible has lead me to a more Christ focused life. I had never read a bible or been to Sunday service, but this provided a no-pressure way for me to explore my faith. The notes clarifying each verse have been extremely helpful in better understanding the context and significance of what’s happening. The quality is excellent and has held up well.

This review is for the LP English Standard Version Study Bible by Crossway, 2017 ed. ISBN 978-1433557668, Trutone Brown/Cordovan/Portfolio. I love this Bible! The ESV is easy to understand for the modern-day reader. This Large Print version is easy on the eyes and the text is crisp and clear. This is a true Study Bible. It includes wonderful explanatory Introductions to each book, page notes, cross references, maps, charts, a concordance, plus a multitude of additional resources that includes such topics as the original languages of the Bible, a daily Bible reading plan, weights and measures, Biblical doctrine, interpreting the Bible and much more. Size-wise, this is a large Bible. The length and width is comparable to standard Bibles; but, due to it being Large Print, it is much thicker (apprx. 3 inches). Some reviews mention a journaling edition of the ESV, but this LP version is a 2-column Bible with very little room for notes. I own a number of different Bible translations and have used them all down through the years, but this one is turning out to be a favorite and will be my regular Study Bible. I have also found it helpful to listen to the ESV on audio while I read along in my print Bible.

Upon opening the book, there is a generous section that highlights the purpose and use of the study bible. Many other books presume that the reader already knows this information and is not fully covered as this study bible provides. There are nice cross-references, maps, and illustrations throughout. The notes are full and easy to understand. The book is perfect in the size of the print for the bible passages, but you'll need your readers or glasses to read the cross-references and notes in the smaller print. Many pages seem to be stuck together, but easily separated once opened. The book sent to me has a strong chemical smell to it which irritates the throat. This may be one of the reasons why I send it back. The other reason I may send it back is the lack of the following books: Tobit, Judith, Maccabies, Wisdom, Sirach, and Buruch. My guess is the publisher wished to follow the Protestant view of the bible away from the Deuterocanon side that the Catholic church follows and provides. It would be a nice selling point if the description offered such before purchasing.

Love this Bible. Great study Bible as it has so much information at your fingertips. Looks like its well made and Will last for years to come.
